CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Oskar Jellvik scored a pair of goals and No. 3 Boston College pulled away in the third period to beat No. 7 Michigan State 6-4 on Thursday night at Kelley Rink to open a two-game non-conference series.
The Eagles improved to 4-1-0, while the Spartans suffered just their second loss and fell to 5-2-0. Friday marked the 28th all-time meeting between the schools.
BC's freshman line of Will Smith (1-2-3), Ryan Leonard (1-1-2) and Gabe Perreault (0-2-2) combined for seven points in the victory, including Leonard's first collegiate goal. Graduate defenseman Jacob Bengtsson also scored his first goal in a Boston College sweater.
Jellvik opened the scoring at 7:37 of the first period when he finished a cross-ice pass from Colby Ambrosio at the left post. The Eagles added another minutes later when Perreault spun a pass to the netfront and Leonard redirected the puck inside the far post at 9:59.
Michigan State answered with a shorthanded goal at 12:03 of the first when Karsen Dorwart beat Jacob Fowler low from the left wing. Dorwart scored again at 18:09, beating Fowler short side from the left circle on the power play.
The Spartans took their first lead of the game at 7:28 of the second period off a goal from Jeremy Davidson.
The Eagles tied the game just over a minute later when Jellvik converted a shorthanded breakaway, sneaking a shot through the five-hole of Trey Augustine. Jellvik now has a team-leading five goals in five games on the season.
Boston College took the lead for good when Smith's turnaround shot from the left circle beat Augustine glove side with 1:50 left in the middle period. Bengtsson tipped an Ambrosio centering feed inside the left post at 8:42 of the third, and Cutter Gauthier hammered a right wing one-timer on the power play at 11:47.
Boston College was 1-for-7 on the power play, while Michigan State was 1-for-5. BC finished with a 36-25 edge in shots on goal and Fowler recorded 21 saves to move to 4-1-0 on the year.
