AMESBURY, Mass. - The Hockey East Association is again the most well-represented college hockey conference in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 100 league alumni set to battle for the NHL’s top prize. Of the 100 products of league member schools, 41 are active players that appeared on the rosters of their NHL clubs this season and 59 include front office staff and coaches representing 10 different member institutions. The full list of players and staff is below.
All 16 teams that clinched a spot in the NHL playoffs have at least one Hockey East alumni on their roster and at least one Hockey East alumni on the coaching staff or in their front office. Of the 117 NCAA alumni on NHL playoff rosters, Hockey East accounts for over one-third of those battling for the Stanley Cup.
The 41 active players represent 10 different institutions with Boston College and Boston University topping the league with nine representatives each. Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Providence claim four alumni each, while Northeastern is represented by three former players and two Maine Black Bears have reached the NHL Playoffs. UMass Lowell, Merrimack, and Vermont all boast one former player vying to etch their name on the Stanley Cup. Additionally, all three Notre Dame products in the Stanley Cup playoffs played in Hockey East.
In total, a record 123 Hockey East alumni appeared in at least one NHL game during the 2024-25 regular season, eclipsing the previous all-time record set in 2021-22 and 2022-23 of 109. It marks making five consecutive season with over 100 Hockey East alumni playing at the game’s highest level. All 11 current men’s member institutions had at least one former player represented.
The Hockey East Association saw 10 alumni raise the 2024 Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers. The league representatives included five players and five members of the Panthers front office staff and it marked the 14th straight year that at least one Hockey East product had their name engraved on the Stanley Cup.
In addition to NCAA alumni dotting NHL playoff rosters, half of the 16 teams competing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs were assembled by general managers who played college hockey: Colorado’s Chris MacFarland (Pace), Florida’s Bill Zito (Yale), Los Angeles’ Rob Blake (Bowling Green), Minnesota’s Bill Guerin (Boston College), Montreal’s Kent Hughes (Middlebury), New Jersey’s Tom Fitzgerald (Providence), Vegas’ Kelly McCrimmon (Michigan), Washington’s Chris Patrick (Princeton).
Six of the qualifying teams are coached by former NCAA players: Carolina’s Rod Brind’Amour (Michigan State), Los Angeles’ Jim Hiller (Northern Michigan), Minnesota’s John Hynes (Boston University), Montreal’s Martin St. Louis (Vermont), St. Louis’ Jim Montgomery (Maine), and Washington’s Spencer Carbery (Alaska Anchorage, St. Norbert).
