HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Boston College and Northeastern are set to battle for the Beanpot championship tonight in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles are searching for their first Beanpot crown since 2018 while the Huskies most recently won in 2020. The championship and third-place game between Boston University and Harvard will both air tonight on NESN+.

Vermont and Providence have secured home ice in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East Women’s Tournament and cannot finish lower than fourth in the final table. Boston College has also secured a bye into the quarterfinals and is within striking distance of locking in home ice with two games remaining.

Holy Cross set a new program record for wins in Hockey East play as Charlotte Sonntag’s first career goal delivered the Crusaders their sixth league win this season at No. 15 UConn on Saturday. Madison Beck tallied 31 saves in the 2-1 victory. Holy Cross is now 5-5-0 in their last 10 outings since the calendar flipped to 2023.

Maine took a 1-0 win over Merrimack on Friday thanks in part to 27 saves from Jorden Mattison, which lifted the Black Bears into sixth place in the Army ROTC Hockey East Standings. The position sets Maine up for a bye into the quarterfinals with two games remaining in the regular season.

The remaining seedings for the Hockey East Women’s Tournament will come down to the final weekend as teams jockey for home ice in both the opening round and quarterfinals as well as first-round byes.

Abigail Levy - Boston College

Abigail Levy (Gr., G; Congers, N.Y.) went 2-0-0 on the week, including a 30-save shutout against Harvard in the Beanpot semifinal and a 35-save performance against BU in a 2-1 win. She stopped 65 of 66 shots she faced for a .985 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average.

Charlotte Sonntag - Holy Cross

Charlotte Sonntag (Fr., F; Sun Valley, Idaho) netted the game-winning goal to deliver the Crusaders a 2-1 road victory over No. 15 UConn on Saturday. It was her first career goal and the second point of her freshman season. The goal secured a win for Holy Cross that set a new program record for wins in Hockey East play.

Cayla Barnes - Boston College

Cayla Barnes (Sr., D; Eastvale, Calif.) helped BC to a 2-0-0 week by scoring the game-winning goal, dished out an assist, blocking four shots and putting four shots on goal against Harvard in the Beanpot semifinal. She added three shots on goal and three blocked shots in a win over BU.

Jorden Mattison - Maine

Jorden Mattison (Jr., G; Fenwick, Ont.) earned a 1-0 shutout victory over Merrimack on Friday, making 27 saves, including 12 saves in the first, nine in the second, and six in the third. The win lifted Maine into the sixth spot in the Army ROTC Hockey East Standings and currently gives the Black Bears a bye into the quarterfinals with two games remaining.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Lacey Martin, BU (Jr., F; Minnetonka, Minn.) Assisted on both of BU’s goals last week against No. 5 Northeastern and BC.

Andrea Brändli, BU (Gr., G; Kloten, Switzerland) Combined for 72 saves in games against No. 5 Northeastern and Boston College.

Carmen Elliott, HC (So., D; Stephenville, N.L.) Recorded four blocked shots against #13 Providence followed by three against #15 UConn to help Holy Cross to a 1-1-0 weekend.

Madison Beck, HC (Jr., G; Lunenburg, N.S.) Beck tallied 31 saves against UConn on Saturday. She helped Holy Cross to their second win over a ranked Hockey East opponent this season. The Crusaders set a program record for most wins in Hockey East play.

Alyssa Wruble, Maine (So., F; Bethlehem, Pa.) Scored Maine’s solo goal in a 1-0 shutout victory over Merrimack. It was her 10th goal of the season giving her 19 points, tied for second most on her team.

Emily Oosterveld, MC (Jr., F; Waterdown, Ont.) Registered an assist and scored the game-tying goal in a 3-3 draw with New Hampshire on Saturday.

Emma Gorski, MC (Sr., G; Wallaceburg, Ont.) Made 24 saves and three stops in the shootout to secure a 3-3 draw and take the extra shootout point from New Hampshire on Saturday.

Kyla Bent, UNH (Jr., D; Halifax, N.S.) Scored a goal in both road games last weekend against 11th-ranked Vermont and Merrimack. Her other stats included three blocked shots. Bent gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at UVM with a goal at 14:42. She finished the game with three blocks. Her goal at Merrimack gave UNH a 2-1 lead at 12:51 of the first period. Both games ended in a 3-3 draw, but UNH took the extra point against Vermont.

Ava Boutilier, UNH (Gr., G; Charlottetown, P.E.I.) Stopped 58 of 61 shots for a 1.97 GAA and .951 save percentage in last week’s games at 11th-ranked Vermont and Merrimack, going 0-0-2. She made 42 saves to backbone UNH to a 3-3 tie and subsequent shootout win at Vermont. Boutilier made 17 first-period saves and seven in overtime. She went on to stop three shots in the shootout to help the Wildcats earn the extra point in the standings. In the 3-3 tie at Merrimack, Boutilier entered the game with the score tied with 1:36 remaining in the second period and stopped all 16 shots the rest of the way to help UNH earn a point. She made 13 saves in the third period and two more in OT.

Chloe Aurard, NU (Gr., F; Villard-de-Lans, France) Tallied four points in a 2-0-0 week for the Huskies. Aurard posted two assists in the Beanpot semifinals in a 4-1 victory over BU. She followed that performance up with a shorthanded goal and an assist in an overtime victory over No. 15 UConn. Aurard had back-to-back primary assists on the two game-winners for the Huskies.

Tory Mariano, NU (So., D; Buffalo, N.Y.) Posted two points and three blocked shots in two victories for Northeastern. Mariano tallied an assist in the 4-1 Beanpot semifinal victory over BU and then recorded the overtime game-winning goal in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over No. 15. UConn. Mariano’s goal against UConn was her first of the season.

Gwyneth Philips, NU (Sr., G; Athens, Ohio) Stopped 45 shots in a 2-0-0 week that included 26 saves in the Beanpot semifinal win over BU and 19 saves against No. 15 UConn in an overtime victroy. She leads the nation with a 0.84 GAA, .959 save percentage, 27 wins and nine shutouts.

Theresa Schafzahl, UVM (Gr., F; Weiz, Austria) Scored three goals and added two assists during Vermont’s 1-0-1 week, including a two-goal game in a 3-3 draw with Maine. She netted the game-tying goal with just 2:04 remaining in regulation to force overtime. She is currently riding a three-game point streak with four goals and two assists.
