Sophomore forward Aydar Suniev scored a hat trick for the Minutemen

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts hockey tallied two third period goals to claim a 4-3 victory in exhibition action against Simon Fraser on Saturday evening at the Mullins Center.

Sophomore winger Aydar Suniev led the Minutemen with a hat-trick, scoring three goal on five shots. Sophomore Cam O'Neill also added a goal on the evening, recording the lone first period goal for the Minutemen. Five different Minutemen recorded assists.

Massachusetts controlled much of the action holding a 39-20 advantage in shots and 38-18 mark in faceoffs.

The Minutemen dominated the first period, taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, thanks in large part to a 15-1 shot advantage over the first 20 minutes of play. Massachusetts winger Cam O'Neill found the net for the first goal of the night with 4:10 remaining in the period.

The Red Leafs evened the score at 1-1 as Simon Fraser's Bradley Banach fired in the equalizer with 10:02 remaining in the second period. Simon Fraser claimed a 2-1 lead on a goal from center Ben Ward with 3:00 on the clock. The Minutemen quickly responded with an equalizer of their own as Aydar Suniev finished a pass from Lucas Olvestad to make it 2-2 with 43 seconds left in the second period.

Simon Fraser's Lucas Ceccarelli opened the third period with a short-handed goal, finishing a pass from winger Kyle Young to take a 3-2 advantage just 2:39 into the third period. Massachusetts evened the score at 3-3 with a goal from Suniev with 12:13 remaining in regulation. Suniev made it a hat-trick on the night, converting a power-play goal into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Minutemen the 4-3 lead with 6:19 left in the period.

At the completion of regulation the two teams participated in a previously agreed upon three-on-three overtime and shootout. Suniev also scored in the three-on-three.

Jackson Irving logged 17 saves for the Minutemen, while Makaj recorded 27 stops for Simon Fraser.

The Minutemen will be back in action on Friday, January 3, when the team will travel to Tempe, Arizona to face no. 14 Cornel as part of the Desert Hockey Classic.
