STORRS, Conn. - The No. 12 UConn women's ice hockey team bested the Boston University Terriers 5-2 Saturday night at the Toscano Family Ice Forum.
Senior forward Jada Habisch scored the go-ahead goal in the third period for her 12th goal of the season. Also, freshman forward Ashley Allard collected two assists for seven assists on the season.
In the first, the Huskies stayed aggressive defensively as goaltender Megan Warrener kept out 11 shots on target to BU's nine. Then, UConn struck first right before the halfway mark in the period. Kyla Josifovic found the speedy Campbell as Campbell set and fired at the goal to split the goalie's legs for the opening point. Three minutes later, another scoring chance opened for the Huskies as Camryn Wong skated down center ice and out of the neutral zone to find Coryn Tormala on the left side of the ice. Tormala angled herself to find the top right shelf for the second goal of the game. Soon after, the Terriers earned themselves a power play on a roughing penalty. BU (Boston University) would execute on the power play to make it 2-1 Huskies. Then, with six minutes to go UConn earned its first power play on a slashing penalty, but the Terriers killed the penalty. UConn would get another power play chance, but again BU would end the penalty kill. The score stayed at 2-1 after the first.
BU came out with strong attacking sequences and got one to go almost midway through the second period. Lilli Welcke for the Terriers tied it up in the period. The Huskies earned themselves a power play on a hooking penalty, but BU would kill the penalty for the third time in the game. Four minutes into the third period, the Huskies took back the lead with a slick finish from Habisch. Allard switched from right to left to find Riley Grimley who then quickly found the wide open Habisch on the right side and knocked in the go-ahead goal. Then, the Huskies kept it rolling as Allard skated down the whole length of the rink on the left side sweeping past defenders to then slide it right to Claire Peterson who had the open bottom right corner of the net for the fourth goal on the afternoon. To round out the night, Kyla Josifovic knocked in the fifth goal of the game on an empty net for the Huskies to finish the game 5-2.
