HANOVER, N.H. - University of Massachusetts hockey scored twice in the first period and three times in the second to defeat Dartmouth in an exhibition matchup at Thompson Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Big Green scored in the 3-on-3 overtime period and UMass won the shootout, 2-0, with goals from junior Ryan Ufko and sophomore Michael Cameron.
"I'm glad we had this so the guys had to play back-to-back with some travel, so it was a little bit of adversity," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought they came out and played well. It was a chippy game, lots of penalties. We were able to play a guys who don't usually play, that's the nice thing about exhibitions. All around, a really solid weekend, seeing good compete and seeing an identity of a team that I like to coach."
In the opening minute of the contest, junior Scott Morrow finished off a feed from graduate student Samuli Niinisaari and Taylor Makar. Cameron added UMass' second at the 15:26 mark, rifling the puck home from the slot with sophomores Owen Murray and Kenny Connors earning assists.
Massachusetts then opened the second period with three goals in the first 4:17 of the frame, with two coming on the power play. Niinisaari netted the first in the flurry from Morrow and Connors.
Connors then scored on the power play from freshman Jack Musa and Morrow picked up his second of the day to cap the scoring for the Minutemen from Ufko and Connors, who finished the contest with four points (1g, 3a).
Dartmouth netted its lone goal of regulation at the 10:38 mark of the second period.
