North Andover, Mass.-The Merrimack Warriors Women's hockey team scored three times including twice in the third period to capture their first win of the season against the Saint Anselm Hawks by a score of 3-2 on Friday night.
Merrimack was able to get off to a flying start as Celine Tedenby put the puck top shelf less than 90 seconds into the contest to put the Warriors in front.
In the second period, Saint Anselm was able to find the tying goal and that how it would stand heading into the final 20 minutes.
The Warriors would take back the lead as Payten Evans took the pass from Mary Edmonds and scored from the slot with just over ten minutes to play in regulation time.
Teghan Inglis would add an insurance marker after making a slick toe drag to round the Saint Anselm defender and finished nicely to double the Warriors advantage with about four minutes to play.
The Hawks would score a consolation goal with 10 seconds to go, but it would be too little, too late as Warriors would get win number one.
Coach Hamlen's post game comments:
"I'll give to Saint Anselm, they're a gritty team and they were going to work to the end and we knew that. I think we came in probably a little this week after the Clarkson series So I think we have to fine tune some of our special teams and puck movement. I think the story is we got some shots on but we didn't get a lot of traffic to the net and once we started doing so things started to happen for us. Their goalie stood and it took us getting bodies to the net for us to get some goals.
(About Ainsley Moutlon getting her first win in her first start)
"I thought Ainsley played well when she had too, she wasn't tested much in the first and that hard for a goalie sometimes to step and not get a lot of shots, but she was sharp on the ones she saw and I thought she stood tall all the way to the end, and the goals against were quality goals so they were out of scrambles and hard to control. I'm proud of her getting her first win the NCAA I'm looking forward to the future for the Warriors."
