Vermont, New Hampshire Earn Wins Over Ranked Conference Opponents

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Vermont earned a 5-4 overtime victory Friday night over Boston College, its first win against the Eagles in five years, in an exciting back-and-forth affair at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Philip Lagunov scored three times in two games against Boston College, including the overtime game-winner on Friday. Boston College responded with a 3-2 victory the next night, powered by Jack McBain’s continued offensive streak. He found the back of the net three times, including a strike in his 100th career game on Friday night. In Saturday’s 3-2 victory, he converted twice on the power-play and is currently riding an eight-game point streak (5g, 9a).

UMass Lowell swept Boston University and vaulted into the national rankings at #19 for the first time this season. Owen Savory won both games to open conference action, including a 3-0 shutout on Friday night. The senior made 29 saves Friday night to guide UMass Lowell to their second consecutive shutout, the seventh of his career. Savory then backboned UMass Lowell to a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center to finish the weekend with 48 total saves while allowing just one goal. Andre Lee scored a team-high three points off two goals and one assist

New Hampshire split a weekend home-and-home with Providence thanks Riley Duran registered his first career multi-point game on Friday in Providence’s 6-1 win with a goal and an assist, also adding an assist in Saturday’s game at the Whittemore Center. On Saturday, Jackson Pierson played hero for the Wildcats, finding the back of the net in overtime while netminder David Fessenden made 31 saves.

Northeastern swept Maine in league play, riding the fourth shutout of the season from Devon Levi in Friday’s 5-0 victory before completing a come-from-behind win, 3-2, on Saturday evening. Jordan Harris registered a goal and three assists as the Husky captain also earned a plus-four rating on Friday night.

Massachusetts and Merrimack dueled to a pair of one-goal contests with the Minutemen emerging victorious each night in the final seconds of the game. On Friday, Colin Felix scored with 4.7 seconds left on the clock in regulation to deliver a 2-1 win. Saturday was equally thrilling, as Merrimack sent the game into overtime with a goal from Ben Brar with 57 seconds remaining. Scott Morrow netted his first career goal in the extra frame to secure six points on the weekend for UMass.

UConn earned a pair of road wins, including one in league play on Tuesday at Northeastern, 5-3. Marc Gatcomb had two goals and an assist in the outings. In Tuesday’s win at #20 NU, Gatcomb scored a goal and picked-up an assist on the game’s first goal of the night. On Saturday, Gatcomb scored an empty netter, his fourth goal of the season, to help seal away a 4-1 win at Dartmouth.

Jack McBain (Sr., F; Toronto, Ont.) found the back of the net three times in a pair of road games at Vermont, including a strike in his 100th career game on Friday night. In Saturday’s 3-2 victory, he converted twice on the power-play and now has three goals and three assists in just three conference games, the most of any player in Hockey East contests. He is currently riding an eight-game point streak to start the season (5g, 9a).

Philip Lagunov (Gr., F; Hamilton, Ont.) scored three times in two games against Boston College, including the overtime game-winner in Friday night’s 5-4 victory to lift the Cata- mounts to their first win over the Eagles in five years. His two goals on Friday game on the power play while his lone strike on Saturday came with less than a second left in the first peri- od to give the ‘Cats a 2-1 lead.

Scott Morrow - Massachusetts

Scott Morrow (Fr., D; Darien, Conn.) helped UMass to a weekend sweep of Merrimack, extending its winning streak to four straight games. The rook- ie blueliner scored his first collegiate goal on the power play in overtime in Saturday’s 5-4 victory, sealing the two-game set for the Minutemen. He also added an assist in that outing for first career multi-point game.

Jordan Harris - Northeastern

Jordan Harris (Sr., D; Haverhill, Mass.) registered a goal and three assists as the Huskies went 2-1-0 last week, all in Hockey East play. The Husky captain also earned a plus-four rating on Friday night in a 5-0 victory over Maine.

Owen Savory - UMass Lowell

Owen Savory (Sr., G; Cambridge, Ont.) backstopped the River Hawks to a series sweep over Boston University to open conference action, including a 3-0 shutout on Friday night. The senior made 29 saves Friday night to guide UMass Lowell to their second consecutive shutout, the seventh of his career. Savory then backboned UMass Lowell to a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center to finish the weekend with 48 total saves while allowing just one goal. He now owns a league-best 1.23 GAA and .946 save percentage and is ranked fifth in the country in GAA (1.23) and sixth in save percentage (.946).


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Jack St. Ivany, BC (Sr., D; Manhattan Beach, Calif.) Racked up four points in a weekend road series at Vermont, including a goal and two helpers on Friday night, to help BC take four league points. He now has more points (1g, 6a, 7p) through the first eight games of the season than the blueliner compiled in 18 contests in 2020-21.

Marc Gatcomb, UConn (Sr., F; Woburn, Mass.) Had two goals and an assist as the Huskies topped Northeastern and Dartmouth, both on the road. In Tuesday’s win at #20 NU, Gatcomb scored a goal and picked-up an assist on the game’s first goal of the night. On Saturday, Gatcomb scored an empty netter, his fourth goal of the season, to help seal away a 4-1 win on the road at Dartmouth.

Ryan Wheeler, UConn (Sr., D; Lancaster, N.Y.) Had a goal and an assist and was a +4 as the Huskies picked up a pair of road wins. Wheeler scored his first goal of the season in the 5-3 win at No. 20 NU on Tuesday. He registered an assist on the Carter Turnbull goal early in the third period at Dartmouth.

Darion Hanson, UConn (Gr., G; East Bethel, Minn.) Went 2-0-0 this week, posting a 2.01 goals against and a .909 save percentage to beat Northeastern and Dartmouth on the road. He collected a total of 40 saves, stopping 28 against Northeastern and 12 at Dartmouth.

Bobby Trivigno, UMass (Sr., F; Setauket, N.Y.) Helped UMass to a weekend sweep of Merrimack, extending its win- ning streak to four games. The Minuteman captain totaled three points on a goal and two assists. He opened the scoring at Merrimack in Friday’s 2-1 road win and had two assists in Saturday’s 5-4 OT victory, both coming in the second period as UMass erased a 2-0 deficit.

Colin Felix, UMass (Sr., D; Ocean City, N.J.) Helped UMass to a weekend sweep of Merrimack, extending its winning streak to four. He factored in both goals of Friday’s 2-1 win at Merrimack, assisting the first tally and scoring the game winner with 4.7 seconds to go in regulation, his first goal in 57 games. He also had an assist in the third period of Saturday’s 5-4 OT thriller.

Andre Lee, UML (Jr., F; Karlstad, Sweden) Scored a team-high three points off two goals and one assist to lift the UMa- ss Lowell River Hawks to a 3-0 victory over Hockey East opponent BU on Friday night. He is currently tied for second on the team in points with five on two goals and three assists. Finished the weekend with a plus-two rating across two games and three blocks.

Ben Meehan, UML (So., D; Walpole, Mass.) Netted the opening goal for the River Hawks en route to a 2-1 victory over BU Saturday night. The goal marked the first of the sophomore defenseman’s career. He also recorded seven shots across the series and finished with a plus-three rating and two blocks against the Terriers.

Logan Drevitch, MC (Sr., F; Middleborough, Mass.) The senior got on the board twice during the weekend against UMass. He tied the game in the third period Friday at Lawler Rink with his first of the season, then scored on the power play Saturday to give Merrimack a two goal lead in Amherst in the first period. Drevitch is now a three-game point streak that includes those two goals and a pair of assists for four points.

Zach Vinnell, MC (Jr., D; Cochrane, Alta.) Continued his torrid scoring pace from the back end over the weekend. He had an assist in both games against UMass and now has a three-game point streak that includes five points on a trio of goals and two helpers.

Ty Jackson, NU (So., F; Oakville, Ont.) Had one goal and three assists as the Huskies went 2-1-0 last week in league play.

Justin Hryckowian, NU (Fr., F; Ile Bizard, Que.) Had two goals and one assist as the Huskies went 2-1-0 last week in league play.

Riley Duran, PC (Fr., F: Woburn, Mass.) Registered his first career multi-point game on Friday in Providence’s 6-1 win over UNH with a goal and an assist, also adding an assist in Saturday’s game at the Whittemore Center.

Simon Jellus, UVM (Fr., F; Illava, Slovakia) Scored his first career goal and added an assist in Vermont’s 5-4 win over #9 Boston College Friday, UVM’s first over BC in five years. He added an assist on Saturday as well. On the weekend he won 16 faceoffs, good for 59.2% on 27 draws. He had five shots and was a plus-two on the weekend.
