HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES
Sandra Abstreiter pitched her third and fourth consecutive shutouts to push Providence’s winning streak to four in a row, all by way of perfect game. The graduate student netminder has not allowed a goal since Sept. 24 and is riding a 251:43 scoreless streak.
New Hampshire and Boston University split a weekend series. The Terriers earned a 2-0 win thanks to a 24-save shut out from Andrea Braendli. She became the first BU goaltender in 12 seasons to record back-to-back shutouts. The next night, New Hampshire’s Kira Juodikis netted two goals and dished out an assist in a 3-2 overtime win. She set up the game-tying goal before burying the decisive winner in the extra frame.
Vermont took five league points from UConn, thanks in part to a goal and two assists from Lara Beecher in 6-1 win over the #14 Huskies on Saturday. Beecher’s tally was also her first collegiate goal.
Northeastern swept Merrimack, allowing just one goal in a two-game
set. Chloe Aurard tallied two goals and two assists in the victories.
Alina Mueller netted two tallies of her own and sits just one assist
shy of setting a new all-time career record with 85 helpers. The
current mark of 84 is shared by Mueller and Husky legend Kendall
Coyne.
HOCKEY EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kira Juodikis - New Hampshire
Kira Juodikis (So., F; LaSalle, Ont.) recorded two goals and an assist for a total of three points in the two-game series against Boston
University. She recorded all three points in a 3-2 overtime in as she
scored nine seconds into the game to quickly give the Wildcats a 1-0
lead. She set up UNH’s power-play goal that gave the ‘Cats a 2-1
buffer just 29 seconds after BU tied the game. She then lifted UNH
to victory when she scored at 3:14 of overtime.
PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Lara Beecher - Vermont
Lara Beecher (Fr., F; Buffalo, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists for
her first career multi-point game in the Catamounts’ 6-1 win over
#14 UConn on Saturday. Beecher’s tally was also her first collegiate
goal.
HOCKEY EAST DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Abbey Marohn - Northeastern
Abbey Marohn (Jr., D; St. Joseph, Mich.) recorded one goal and
two assists for three points over a two-win weekend for the Huskies.
Marohn netted her first career goal, which counted as the game-winner, in Northeastern’s 4-1 victory over Merrimack.
STOP IT GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Sandra Abstreiter - Providence
Sandra Abstreiter (Gr., G; Freising, Germany) pushed her shutout
streak to four games with back-to-back blankings of Holy Cross
over the weekend. She has not allowed a goal since Sept. 24 and is
riding a 251:43 scoreless streak. It was her 13th career shutout and
Abstreiter is the only goalie in Providence College women’s hockey
history to record four straight shutouts.
HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS
Kate Ham, BC (Fr., F; Hingham, Mass.) Potted a goal and added an assist in a split weekend against #11 Penn State, pushing her point streak to four games (2g, 2a) and now has at least one point in six of her first seven NCAA contests.
Julia Nearis, BU (Sr., F; Beverly, Mass.) Tallied a goal and an assist in a 3-2 overtime loss to UNH on Saturday.
Andrea Braendli, BU (Gr., G; Kloten, Switzerland) Became the first BU goaltender in 12 seasons to record back-to-back shutouts following her 24-save performance in a 2-0 win at UNH on Friday.
Emma Gorski, MC (Sr., G; Wallaceburg, Ont.) Made 48 saves in Friday’s 5-0 setback to #3 Northeastern.
Calli Hogarth, MC (Fr., G; Barrie, Ont.) Stopped 44 shots in a 4-1 loss to #3 Northeastern on Saturday.
Sydney Lynch, MC (Fr., D; Caledon, Ont.) Netted her first collegiate goal, Merrimack’s lone strike, in Saturday’s contest with #3 Northeastern.
Chloe Aurard, NU (Gr., F; Villard-De-Lans, France) Tallied two goals and two assists in two wins over Merrimack. Aurard scored on the power-play at Merrimack in Friday’s 5-0 victory. In Saturday’s 4-1 win at home Aurard had a three-point performance, which included assisting on the game-winning goal.
Lily Shannon, NU (Fr., F; Andover, Mass.) Posted one goal and one assist in two wins over Merrimack. Shannon is on a two-game scoring streak and leads all Husky rookies with six points (2g, 4a) on the season.
Rachel Weiss, PC (Jr., F; Calgary, Alta.) Scored the game winning goal on Saturday, Oct.15 that first put the Friars on the board 1-0 against Holy Cross. On Friday, Oct. 14 she recorded an assist for two points. Overall Weiss has one goal and five assists on the season.
Ellice Murphy, UVM (Gr., D; Roseau, Minn.) Earned her first career two-goal game on Saturday in the Catamounts’ 6-1 win over #14 UConn. She also played a key role in the UVM defense as they held the 14th ranked Huskies to just two goals and 25 shots over 125 minutes of game action.
