Boston University Stays Unbeaten, Providence Draws With Quinnipiac

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Boston College and UConn extended their winning streaks to open the 2021-22 season, both taking a pair of victories in league play. The Eagles swept a home-and-home with New Hampshire, while the Huskies took down Maine and Merrimack in Friday-Saturday set.

UConn continued its best start in program history, moving to 6-0-0 to begin the year, including a 5-0-0 mark on the road and they are outscoring opponents 21-9. Samantha Carpentier-Yelle kicked out 49 saves on 52 shots over the weekend, including a 17-save shutout at Maine on Friday, to backbone the Huskies.

Abby Newhook netted two goals, including the game-winning goal, in Boston College’s come-from-behind win at New Hampshire on Saturday. Kelly Brown scored the game-winning goal for BC in Friday’s win over UNH and notched an assist on Saturday’s first goal in a come-from-behind win to finish the weekend with two points, eight shots on goal, plus-one rating and 19 face-off wins.

#9/9 Providence skated to a pair of non-conference stalemates with #8/8 Quinnipiac. Sandra Abstreiter tallied a season-high 37 saves in Saturday’s road game, and 58 total saves on the weekend for the Friars. She finished the weekend with a .960 GAA and a .966 save percentage on the season.

Merrimack competed in its first shootout in program history, going seven rounds at Boston University on Friday night. The Warriors earned the extra point in the standings with a fourth round goal by Katie Kaufman, and a clinching seventh round goal by Courtney Maud. Emma Gorski stopped six of seven attempts in goal.

Maureen Murphy - Northeastern

Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.) led all league players in scoring on the week with her five-point, four-goal evening at Saint Anselm on Wednesday. Her performance was Northeastern’s first hat trick of the year and the first individual four-goal game since 2012. Her offensive outburst was the first four-goal game since Boston College’s Gaby Roy did so on Nov. 20 of 2020 and the first five-out outing since teammate Alina Mueller had one goal and four assists on Feb. 6 of this year.


PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Abby Newhook - Boston College

Abby Newhook (St. John’s, New.) netted two goals, including the game-winning goal, in Boston College’s come-from-behind win at New Hampshire on Saturday. The freshman finished the two-win weekend with two goals, six shots on goal and a plus-two rating.

Teghan Inglis - Merrimack

Teghan Inglis (Okotos, Alta.) scored three goals for the Warriors last weekend, including two against Boston University in a 4-4 road draw on Friday evening. Her two tallies helped put Merrimack in a shootout, which the Warriors won, to earn two league points. The transfer student then found the back of the net in the final two minutes of a comeback effort at UConn on Sunday, coming up just short. The three goals are the first for Inglis as a Warrior. Defensively, the junior leads the team in blocked shots.

Samantha Carpentier-Yelle - UConn

Samantha Carpentier-Yelle (Bromont, Que.) kicked out 49 saves on 52 shots over the weekend, including a 17-save shutout of Maine on the road on Friday, to backbone UConn to a pair of victories in league play. Her performance in net moved her to 4-0-0 on the year and has helped the Huskies begin the 2021-22 season with an unblemished 6-0-0 record, the best start in program history. The six victories include five on the road while they are outscoring opponents 21-9.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Kelly Brown, BC (Sr., F; Burlington, Mass.) Scored the game-winning goal for BC in Friday’s win over UNH. She notched an assist on Saturday’s first goal in a come-from-behind win to finish the weekend with two points, eight shots on goal, plus-one rating and 19 face-off wins.

Sidney Fess, BC (So., D; Clifton Park, N.Y.) Dished out two assists in Friday’s win over UNH. In the two-game set against the Wildcats, the second-year defender had two points, three shots on goal, a plus-thre rating and three blocked shots.

Abigail Levy, BC (Sr., G; Congers, N.Y.) Backstopped BC to a two-win weekend over UNH. She made 30 saves, including 16 in the second period, on Friday night to preserve a 2-1 victory. She then had a 22-stop performance in Saturday’s win. The senior netminder went 2-0-0 on the weekend with a 1.50 goals against average and .945 save percentage. Courtney Correia, BU (Sr., F; Whitby, Ont.) Potted two goals in the Terriers’ 4-4 tie with Merrimack on Friday night.

Brianna Brooks, UNH (So., F; Whitby, Ont.) Recorded two goals and an assist for three points in a home-and-home series against #4 Boston College. She scored UNH’s lone goal, which tied the score at 1-1 at 14:56 of the third period, in the Wildcats’ 2-1 road loss on Friday. Brooks followed that with a goal and an assist to match her career high of two points in a 3-2 home loss; she set up the first goal and then struck early in the second period to give the ‘Cats a 2-0 lead. Brooks’ other stats included eight shots (four each game), a +1 rating and a .655 faceoff winning percentage (19/29).

Kira Juodikis, UNH (Fr., F; LaSalle, Ont.) Registered a goal and an assist for a total of two points in the two-game series against #4 Boston College. She tallied an assist on UNH’s goal late in the third period that tied the score 1-1, but BC went on to the 2-1 win. One day later on home ice, her first-period goal gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead (3-2 loss).

Brooke Hobson, NU (Gr., D; Prince Alberta, Sask.) Notched a pair of points on a 2-0 week for Northeastern, tallying a goal at Saint Anselm and an assist at Maine.

Aerin Frankel, NU (Gr., G; Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) One of two netminders to record a shutout for the Huskies this week, with 34 saves against Maine on Saturday. It was her second shutout of the season and the 30th of her career.

Hayley Lunny, PC (Gr., F: Bedford, N.Y.) Scored the Friars sole tally in Saturday’s 1-1 tie against #8 Quinnipiac. Lunny tipped in a shot from the point by Lily Martinson for her third goal of the season in four games. Lunny also recorded a game-high five blocks.

Lily Martinson, PC (Fr., D; Allen, Texas) Earned her first career assist as a Friar in Providence’s lone goal against #8 Quinnipiac on Saturday off a shot from the point that was tipped in by graduate student Hayley Lunny. Recorded one block against Quinnipiac in Friday’s game in Schneider.

Brooke Becker, PC (So., D; Orchard Park, N.Y.) Becker, a leading point scorer for the Friars this season, netted a power play goal against #8 Quinnipiac in Friday’s game in Providence. The goal put the Friars up 2-1 before the Bobcats struck back to tie the game at 2-2. Becker recorded two blocks Friday before tallying one block on Saturday.
