MADISON, Wis. - The No. 11 Boston University women's ice hockey team (24-12-2, 18-7-2 HE) concluded its season with a 3-1 loss to No. 9 Clarkson (25-12-2, 13-8-1 ECAC) in the NCAA NC women's ice hockey regional semifinals on Thursday at La Bahn Arena.
Clarkson scored two goals in the first 5:30 of the game to secure a lead which it never relinquished. After even play through the second frame, BU pulled senior netminder Callie Shanahan from the posts with 4:18 to play in the third. Graduate student Lindsay Bochna helped BU cut into Clarkson's lead 2-1 just 17 seconds later, but BU could not fully complete the comeback. Clarkson added another goal on an empty net with under a minute to play to defeat the Terriers, 3-1.
Graduate student Julia Shaunessy and sophomore Alex Law both assisted on the goal. Senior goaltender Callie Shannahan made 27 saves in the loss.
The Terriers overall record of 24-12-2 is their best since the 2019-20 season. BU made its seventh trip to the NCAA tournament and its first since 2015.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams put pressure on either end of the ice through the opening five minutes.
- Clarkson opened the scoring when it took the puck up the ice and dodged multiple Terriers to find the back of the net at 5:09 in the first.
- BU went on the penalty kill 15 seconds later due to a body checking penalty.
- Just 16 seconds later, the Golden Knights scored on the power play to build to a 2-0 lead.
- The Terriers went back on the penalty kill with 2:20 to go in the first due to a tripping call and were successful.
- With 9:10 to play in the second, Clarkson went to the box for holding.
- The Terriers did not find the back of the net on the power play.
- The Golden Knights held their 2-0 lead through the second period.
- BU was called for slashing at 3:31 in the third frame and were once again successful on the penalty kill.
- The Terriers went back to the box at 6:32 for body checking and killed off the penalty.
- Seconds later, Clarkson went to the box for body checking.
- BU did not score on the power-play chance.
- The Terriers pulled Shanahan from between the posts at 15:42 in the third in favor of an extra attacker.
- Seventeen seconds later, Law passed to Shaunessy, whose initial shot rebounded in the crease.
- Bochna collected the puck off the rebound to score, helping BU cut into the Golden Knights' lead, 2-1.
- BU took Shanahan back out of the net with 2:03 to play to once again add an extra skater.
- Clarkson scored on the empty net with 35 seconds remaining to bring the final score to Clarkson 3, BU 1.
GAME NOTES
- Clarkson outshot BU 30 to 18.
- BU was 0-for-2 on the power play while Clarkson was 1-for-4.
- The Terriers won 25 faceoffs compared to the Golden Knights' 21.
- BU blocked 22 shots and Clarkson blocked 15.
