BOSTON, Mass. - For the third-straight year, the No. 15/14 Northeastern women's hockey is crowned Beanpot champions, as they defeated the Boston University Terriers by a score of 4-0 at TD Garden on Tuesday evening.
For the second ever women's beanpot played at TD Garden, the total attendance was 13,279, marking the largest women's hockey crowd for New England history and the fifth largest crowd in NCAA women's hockey history.
- Northeastern opened scoring for the second-straight Tuesday to take a 1-0 lead at 11:29 mark in the first period. Graduate student Lily Yovetich took advantage of getting pucks on net as her shot deflected off the BU defender and into the net for her first goal of the season. Junior Kristina Allard and senior Tory Mariano were credited with the helpers.
- The Huskies would extend their lead to 3-0 after scoring two goals in the final three minutes of the middle frame. As graduate student Jaden Bogden picked off an attempted pass from the Terriers, her shot deflected into the slot and was cleaned up by junior Lily Shannon for her second of the tournament.
- Only 42 seconds after Shannon's goal, Bogden picked up her second point of the night with a goal at the 1:41 mark. Bogden, making her presence known in front of the crease, buried the redirect off a shot by junior Jules Constantinople's to put the Huskies up by three goals. Senior Skylar Irving collected the secondary assist after a won battle along the boards.
- In the final period, Boston University pulled their goaltender with 5:19 to play. From the just inside the far blueline, senior Skylar Irving threw the puck into the empty net to secure the Huskies 4-0 victory.
- Netminder Lisa Jönsson stopped all 30 shots she faced in the final, earning her the shutout, the Joe Bertagna Award for the best goaltender in the tournament and tournament MVP honors.
- Northeastern improves to 20-11-1 all-time in the championship round of the Women's Beanpot, with a 20-5-4 record against Boston University in the tournament.
The Huskies are back to conference play this Friday and Saturday, January 24 and 25 with a home-and-home series with Merrimack. Northeastern will host the Warriors Friday night at 7 p.m. before heading to North Andover Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
