TROY, N.Y. - The Holy Cross women's hockey team opened its season at RPI for the first of two games on the weekend. The Crusaders took home their first program win over the Engineers with a thrilling third period comeback for the 3-2 victory.
BETWEEN THE PIPES:
Holy Cross: Brooke Loranger (W, 1-0), 18 saves
RPI: Reese Keating (L, 0-1), 25 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Just 18 seconds into the first period, sophomore Taylor Cantelon sent in a laser to net the first goal of the season.
- In the second period, RPI answered with a power-play goal scored by Aylah Cioffi at 6:40.
- An action-packed third period began with the Engineers taking their first lead of the competition with a goal by Morgann Skoda at 1:47. The Crusaders tied it back up 2-2 with a short-handed goal scored by senior Michela Lio from the center line at 6:43. Freshman Hannah Deck fired a shot on the 5v3 power-play which deflected off of junior assistant captain Alexia Moreau's stick for the game-winning goal at 13:22.
- Holy Cross led RPI 49-41 in shots and 30-26 in face-offs to conclude the game.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- Deck earned her first collegiate points with an assist on the game-winner.
- Lio scored the third short-handed goal in Crusader Hockey East Era history.
