UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior Lily Shannon's two-point performance and senior Paige Taborski's 23-save effort led the No. 13 Northeastern women's hockey team to a season-opening, 3-1, victory over the No. 12 Penn State Nittany Lions on Thursday evening at Pegula Ice Arena.
Shannon and graduate student Jaden Bogden finished with multi-point efforts for the Huskies.
- Penn State opened the scoring with a goal at the 11:31 mark of the first period.
- Senior Skylar Irving potted the Huskies' first goal of the season to tie the score up at 1-1, 45 seconds after PSU's goal. Irving fired home a pass from graduate student Jaden Bogden who picked up her first point as a Husky on the assist. Senior Tory Mariano was credited with the secondary assist.
- Shannon tallied the eventual game-winning goal on a 5-on-3 opportunity in the second period with assists from graduate student Lily Yovetich and sophomore Rylie Jones.
- As the clock wound down in the third period, Penn State pulled its goaltender in favor of the extra skater. Bogden skated down a puck Shannon cleared out of the Huskies' zone and freshman Éloïse Caron put it home to make the final score 3-1. The goal was the first of Caron's collegiate career.
- Taborski finished with 23 saves and earned her first win of the season.
The Huskies close out their two-game series at PSU on Friday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m.
