BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team defeated Concordia in a 4-1 decision in an exhibition game at Agganis Arena on Friday afternoon.

Concordia opened the scoring 3:54 into the first and, despite multiple chances, held the Terriers scoreless through the first stanza. BU evened the score in the second when junior Luisa Welcke found the back of the net 4:10 into the second.

The Terriers found their footing in the third when freshman Lola Reid scored the game-winner to put BU up 2-1. The score remained unchanged until late in the final frame when a shot by senior Christina Vote found the back of the net and was ruled a goal after a coach's challenge. Concordia pulled its goaltender which gave way to an empty net goal from junior Riley Walsh in the final two minutes to bring the final score to BU 4, Concordia 1.

Juniors Lilli Welcke and Reilly Walsh recorded assists on Lu. Welcke's goal. Senior Ani FitzGerald and junior Sydney Healey also found the scoresheet with assists on Reid's goal. Senior Callie Shanahan and sophomore Mari Pietersen split time between the posts with Shanahan making seven saves and Pietersen tallying 11.


HOW IT HAPPENED

- Concordia lit the lamp with a goal 3:54 into the first period.

- The Stingers went to the box for a cross check at12:43 but BU did not make anything of the power play.

- Shortly after, senior Maggie Hanzel went to the box for hooking resulting in a 4-on-4 situation on the ice. Both penalties cleared with no difference to the score.

- In the second, passes from Walsh and Li. Welcke made their way to Lu. Welcke who scored the equalizer for BU.

- BU swapped Shanahan for Pietersen in net with 8:58 on the clock.

- Concordia was put in the box for holding and BU served a penalty for too many players on the ice shortly thereafter, resulting in the second 4-on-4 situation of the day.

- Both sides were back to even strength until the Stingers were called for slashing late in the second to put BU on the power play headed into second intermission.

- Just over seven minutes into the third, the Terriers battled for the puck behind the net as S. Healey passed to FitzGerald who found Reid to score the go-ahead 2-1 goal.

- Both sides served a penalty and had power play chances but nothing came of the skater-up opportunities.

- With 2:03 to go in the game, Vote had a breakaway chance up the middle and fired off a shot that hit the back of the net and bounced out which caused play to continue.

- At the next stoppage, a coach's challenge resulted in Vote's shot being ruled a goal to put BU up 3-1.

- Concordia pulled its goalie but, despite the extra skater opportunity, was not able to score.

- Walsh gained control of the puck and sent it into an empty net for the final goal of the game with just over a minute to go.

- Both teams were called for cross checking with 57 seconds left on the clock to end the game in 4-on-4 play.

- The Terriers ran out the clock to secure the 4-1 exhibition win.


GAME NOTES

- BU recorded 36 shots on goal to Concordia's 19.

- The Terriers won 25 faceoffs compared to Concordia's 24.

- Both teams blocked eight shots with graduate student Tamara Giaquinto, junior Maeve Kelly and freshman Keira Healey each blocking two.

- Graduate student Julia Shaunessy, S. Healey and junior Maeve Carey were all +2 in the game.

- The Terriers begin the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 1 when they host Merrimack at Agganis Arena.
