NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Merrimack Warriors Women's hockey team were down three goals in the final five minutes but fired back with three rapid fire goals in the final three and half minutes to tie the game at three a piece to send the game to overtime and eventually the shootout where they would get the win in the tiebreaker 2-1 to nab the extra point on Saturday night against the University of Maine Black Bears on Saturday night.
The Basics
Merrimack (7-14-3, 4-10-3): 3 (2), Maine (11-12-2, 7-9-3): 3 (1)
After a scoreless first period, in which Calli Hogarth made eight saves, the Black Bears got the board first midway through the second period. The Warriors would go the powerplay but it would be Maine taking advantage with a breakaway shorthanded tally five minutes later. They would score a third with under a minute to go.
The Warriors got on the comeback trail late in the third as Ally Qualley scored from in close. Merrimack would claw another back less than two minutes later as Sophie McKinley scored her own rebound with the goalie pulled. Merrimack would pull the goalie again with a late faceoff, but it would come down the final seconds as Emma Pfeffer would score the tying goal with 4.4 seconds to play in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Despite Merrimack getting a powerplay in overtime, neither team would score in the extra five minute period, sending the contest to a shootout.
In the shootout, Maria Lindberg and Celine Tedenby would score for the Warriors to collect the extra point in Hockey East.
