DURHAM, N.H. - The Boston University women's ice hockey team held on for a 5-3 win on the road at New Hampshire on Saturday at the Whittemore Center.
BU, which never fell behind, scored two unanswered goals in the first period before UNH found the back of the net in the second. The Terriers added two more goals to its lead in the middle frame but UNH closed in with two goals of its own in the third. Despite the effort from the Wildcats, BU added one final goal to come away with the victory.
Senior Catherine Foulem scored the lamp-lighter for BU and was backed by senior Lacey Martin with the Terriers' second goal. Junior Andi Calderone tallied three points with two goals on the power play, both in the second period, and an assist. Junior Maggie Hanzel also recorded two assists and Martin earned an extra point with an assist of her own. Sophomore Clara Yuhn added the exclamation point on BU's win with a late goal in the third.
The Terriers improve to 5-3-1 overall and 4-3-0 in Hockey East play. Freshman netminder Mari Pietersen made 19 saves in sixth start for BU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite starting the game on a penalty kill due to a protocol violation, Foulem stole a pass from UNH to take the puck up the slot and score shorthanded at the 1:03 mark.
- BU gained momentum on a power play midway through the first with the Wildcats in the box for hooking.
- Calderone and Hanzel set up Martin who fired off a shot from deep in the slot to score just after the power play ended to close the scoring in the opening frame.
- Sophomore Brooke Disher was called for slashing early in the second which led to a power-play goal for UNH.
- A few minutes later, a pass from Martin made its way to Calderone who scored a power-play goal of her own from the left post to extend BU's lead to 3-1.
- Another penalty on the Wildcats gave BU an opportunity to extend its lead midway through the second.
- Hanzel and junior Christina Vote set up Calderone who skated toward the left post and fired a wrister that found the back of the net.
- In the third period, UNH scored off a rebound to cut BU's lead to 4-2.
- The Wildcats continued to close in as they tipped in the puck at the crease for their third goal at the 6:52 mark.
- Yuhn picked up the puck in the neutral zone and took it around the back of the net for a sneaky goal that extended BU's lead with 2:40 to go in the third.
- BU went on the penalty kill and UNH pulled its goalie for the final two minutes of the game, but the Wildcats were unable to change the outcome of BU's 5-3 win.
GAME NOTES
- BU narrowly outshot UNH 24 to 22.
- Both teams had five total assists on their goals.
- The Terriers went 2-for-4 on the power play compared to the Wildcats who went 1-for-5.
- Calderone boasts three goals on the season, a career best in the category.
- Hanzel now owns eight points on the season, also a career best.
- Pietersen has over 100 career saves after today's performance.
