UMass, Providence Extending Winning Streaks to Seven Straight

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Boston College downed Harvard, 5-1, in the first Beanpot semifinal Monday night to advance to the title game for the second year in a row. Boston Bruins prospect James Hagens scored two goals, including the game-winner, while fellow B’s draft pick Dean Letourneau added a goal of his own. BC last won the Beanpot in 2016.

The Eagles will clash with Boston University next Monday night at 7:30 p.m, a rematch of the 2025 Beanpot title game. The Terriers moved past Northeastern in a shootout after skating to a 2-2 draw in front of a sold out TD Garden. BU is looking for back-to-back titles for the first time since 2006-07.

Massachusetts and Providence both extended their league-best winning streaks to seven games over the weekend. The Friars earned a come-from-behind win at Maine on Saturday night as Andrew Centrella knotted the game a two with just 5.6 seconds left in regulation before Logan Sawyer scored his third game-winning goal of January in the extra frame.

The Minutemen posted a 3-2 overtime win of their own on Friday over Northeastern before holding off a late surge from UMass Lowell on Sunday, winning 6-4.

Merrimack improved to 8-2-1 since Dec. 12 with an unbeaten weekend against New Hampshire. Max Lundgren made 52 saves on 55 shots and Justin Gill scored his 10th goal of the season for the Warriors.

Vermont swept Stonehill in non-conference action, improving Hockey East’s out of league record to 58-37-7, including a 16-4-1 run since Dec. 29. Aiden Wright posted a 19-save shutout on Saturday, moving to 7-3-0 in his last 10 starts.

Jack Musa - Massachusetts

Jack Musa (Jr., F; Orange Park, Fla.) helped UMass extend its winning streak to seven straight games, scoring a go-ahead goal in Friday’s 3-2 overtime win over Northeastern. On Sunday, he set a career-high with four points (3g, 1a) in a single game, netting his second career hat trick in a 6-4 win at UMass Lowell.

Justin Kerr - Massachusetts

Justin Kerr (Fr., F; Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of overtime on Friday in UMass’ 3-2 win over Northeastern. He then followed up with his third goal of the season in Sunday’s 6-4 victory at UMass Lowell.

Max Lundgren - Merrimack

Max Lundgren (Jr., G; Angelholm, Sweden) made 52 saves on 55 shots in an unbeaten weekend against New Hampshire, including 21 saves in his 13th win of the season on Friday and 31 in a 3-3 tie on Saturday. Lundgren has played every minute for the Warriors this season and is 8-2-1 since Dec. 12.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Dean Letourneau, BC (So., F; Arnprior, Ont.) Finished with one goal and one assist in Boston College’s 4-1 road win victory over Boston University on Friday in its lone game of the week. He also had the primary assist on the game-winning goal.

Diego Buttazzoni, UML (Fr., F; Langley, B.C.) Potted a power-play goal and added an assist in Sunday’s 6-4 setback to UMass.

Josh Mori, UML (Fr., D; Richmond, B.C.) Enjoyed his first career multi-goal game, scoring twice on Sunday against Massachusetts in a 6-4 setback. He opened the game’s scoring just 3:44 into the contest and then sparked a two-goal River Hawks’ comeback with his second strike 3:24 into the final frame.

TJ Schweighardt, UML (Sr., D; Manahawkin, N.J.) Netted a game-tying goal in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit for the River Hawks in an eventual 6-4 setback.

Justin Gill, MC (Fr., F; St-Joseph-du-Lac, Que.) Reached the 10-goal mark on the year with a tally in each game of a 1-0-1 weekend series against New Hampshire, extending his point streak to eight games (5g, 5a) and goal streak to three.

Kyle Chauvette, UNH (Sr., G; Goffstown, N.H.) Posted a .915 save percentage and a 2.45 goals against average on the week while making 54 saves on 59 shots in a 0-1-1 series with Merrimack. He made 27 saves as the Wildcats fell at Merrimack 2-1 on Friday, while he posted 27 saves and allowed three goals as UNH tied Merrimack 3-3 on Saturday. Chauvette made two saves during the shootout as the Wildcats picked up the extra point with a 2-1 shootout win.

Logan Sawyer, PC (So., F; Orangeville, Ont.) Assisted on the game-tying goal with 5.6 seconds left in regulation and the scored the winning goal in overtime in the Friars’ 3-2 comeback win at No. 17 Maine on Saturday night.

Andrew Centrella, PC (Jr., D; Philadelphia, Pa.) Scored the game-tying goal with 5.6 seconds left in regulation in the Friars’ 3-2 overtime win at No. 17 Maine on Saturday.

Aiden Wright, UVM (Fr., G; Wake Forest, N.C.) Posted a 19-save shutout of Stonehill on Saturday night, his second career perfect game. He is now 7-3-0 in his last 10 starts.

Colin Kessler, UVM (So., F; Anchorage, Alaska) Scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Friday to deliver a 3-2 win for the Catamounts. UVM closed January with a 6-3-0 record.
