Maine, Northeastern Capture Sweeps of Top-Ranked Teams

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Northeastern improved to 3-0-0 in league play as the Huskies’ swept No. 11 Boston College. Lawton Zacher backboned his team to their fourth-straight win over a ranked opponent. He made 62 saves, including a season-high 40 stops and a 32-save shutout, and allowed just one goal that came on the power play.

Maine swept Boston University with an explosion of 13 goals, including eight on Saturday. Justin Poirier racked up five points (3g, 2a) in the series, while Brandon Holt added four points of his own, including the overtime winner on Friday. BU’s Cole Hutson posted five points (1g, 4a) for the Terriers to push his point streak to four games.

UConn went 1-0-1 on the weekend behind goaltender Tyler Muszelik, who stopped 56 of 58 shots he faced. After a 1-1 draw with Harvard, the Huskies returned to Hockey East play with a 5-1 victory over Merrimack.

Providence and UMass Lowell split a home-and-home series that saw the home team capture a full three points in each outing. The Friars were led by rookie Jonathan Fauchon, who scored a goal in each game, while four points from Jak Vaarwerk helped UMass Lowell earn the split the next night.

Vermont took its first win in league play with a 2-1 victory over New Hampshire on Saturday, splitting the weekend series. Jax Wismer, scored the game’s opening goal before setting up the decisive tally late in the third period as Aiden Wright stopped 59 shots and allowed just four goals. The Wildcats had earned a 4-2 win the prior evening, as Ryan Philbrick netted the game-winning goal.

Lawton Zacher - Northesastern

Lawton Zacher (Jr., G; Buffalo, N.Y.) posted two wins against No. 10 Boston College in a sweep of the Eagles, stopping 72 shots and allowing just one goal. He collected a .986 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average. In Thursday’s 4-1 win, he made a season-high 40 saves and followed up with a 32-save shutout in a 3-0 win on Friday. He now has four straight wins over ranked opponents and is 3-0-0 in Hockey East play.

Justin Poirier - Maine

Justin Poirier (Fr., F; Valleyfield, Que.) led Maine and tied for league lead with five points on three goals and two assists in a sweep of No. 5 Boston University. He scored two goals and added an assist, including on the overtime game-winning goal in Friday’s 5-4 win. He followed up with one goal and one assist in an 8-5 victory on Saturday. He paced Hockey East with three goals and added eight shots on net.

Vinny Borgesi - Northeastern

Vinny Borgesi (Sr., D; Philadelphia, Pa.) posted two points in two wins over No. 11 Boston College, including the game-winning goal on Thursday at Conte Forum. He then set up the game-winning strike the next day in a 3-0 shutout win at home to go along with seven blocked shots, a plus-four rating and four shots on goal.

Tyler Muszelik - UConn

Tyler Muszelik (Sr., G; Long Valley, N.J.) stopped 56 of 58 shots he faced from Harvard and Merrimack to go unbeaten last weekend, posting a .966 save percentage and 0.96 goals against average, both second best in Hockey East last weekend.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Cole Hutson, BU (So., D; Chicago, Ill.) Racked up five points on one goal and four assists in a two-game set at Maine. He is currently riding a four-game point streak with one goal and six assists.

Brandon Svoboda, BU (So., F; Pittsburgh, Pa.) Posted four points (2g, 2a) in Saturday’s 8-5 setback at Maine.

Brandon Holt, Maine (Sr., D; Grand Forks, Mich.) Led Maine to a 2-0-0 weekend with four points on one goal and three assists. He scored the overtime game-winning goal on Friday night and followed it up with three helpers on Saturday for Maine’s first weekend sweep of BU since 2012. He had plus-three rating, one blocked shot and six shots on goal.

Jak Vaarwerk, UML (Jr., F; Clarence, N.Y.) Earned four total points on two goals and two assists to help UMass Lowell take a series split with No. 16 Providence. In Friday’s 5-2 setback, he assisted the team’s first goal and scored the second, before finding the back of the net again in Saturday’s 5-1 victory and tacking on another assist.

Nate Misskey, UML (Fr., D; Melfort, Sask.) Scored his first career NCAA goal and added an assist in Saturday’s 5-1 win over No. 16 Providence.

TJ Schweighardt, UML (Sr., D; Manahawkin, N.J.) Potted the game-winner in Saturday’s 5-1 victory over No. 16 Providence in the second period while shorthanded to help the River Hawks to a weekend split.

Austin Elliott, UML (Fr., G; Strathmore, Alta.) Helped UMass Lowell to a weekend split with No. 16 Providence. In Friday’s 5-2 setback, he entered the game to start the second period and made 16 saves in 40:00 relief. He then started game two, making 23 saves on 24 shots in a 5-1 victory.

Morgan Winters, UNH (Sr., F; Osprey, Fla.) Scored two goals as the Wildcats went split a weekend with Vermont. He scored an empty net goal from his own zone in a 4-2 win on Friday and then netted UNH’s lone goal in a 2-1 setback on Saturday. Winters is ranked first on the team with six points, while he is tied for first with four goals.

Ryan Philbrick, UNH (Fr., D; Concord, N.H.) Netted the game-winning goal on Friday in a 4-2 win over Vermont. It was his first collegiate game-winner. Philbrick was also a team-best plus-two on the week.

Kyle Chauvette, UNH (Sr., G; Goffstown, N.H.) Went 1-1-0 on the week against Vermont with a 2.03 goals against average and a .905 save percentage as he allowed four goals on 42 shots. He made 15 saves and allowed two goals on Friday in a 4-2 win, while he posted 23 saves on Saturday in the 2-1 loss.

James Fisher, NU (So., F; Burlington, Mass.) Recorded two goals in two games to help NU to a weekend sweep over No. 11 Boston College. He scored the game opener on Thursday on the road and made it 2-0 for the Huskies on Friday at home. Additionally, he posted a plus-two rating and added three shots on goal.

Jacob Mathieu, NU (Fr., F; St-Odilon, Que.) Collected three points over the weekend in an sweep over No. 11 Boston College. He scored a goal in game one, before tacking on two assists in a 3-0 shutout in game two. He tallied a .500 faceoff percentage and put two shots on goal and had three blocked shots, and a plus-two rating.

Jonathan Fauchon, PC (Fr., F; Sainte-Claire, Que.) Scored a goal in each game of a 1-1-0 weekend against UMass Lowell, notching a total of three points on two goals and one assist.

Jax Wismer, UVM (So., D; Newmarket, Ont.) Pushed Vermont to a 2-1 win at New Hampshire on Saturday, scoring the game’s opening goal before setting up the decisive tally late in the third period.

Aiden Wright, UVM (Fr., G; Wake Forest, N.C.) Stopped 59 shots and allowed just four goals in a weekend split at New Hampshire.
