HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES
Hockey East’s men’s league has continued to see parity across the board, as all eight teams in conference action last weekend earned multiple points. To date, there have been 17 two-game series in Hockey East with the same opponents playing in consecutive games. There have been just three six-point series sweeps in those 17 series.
Providence rookie Roger McQueen had two goals, including a game-winning strike and a game-tying tally, to help the Friars earn four league points on the weekend. He added an assist in Saturday’s road win. On Thursday, UMass’s Mikey DeAngelo scored both goals in a 2-1 in Providence.
Boston College and Maine split a weekend series in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles won their fifth-straight game on Friday night, 7-3, thanks in part to a career-high 35 saves from Eagles’ rookie Louka Cloutier. The next day, Maine freshman Mathis Rousseau stopped all 21 shots he faced to deliver the Black Bears their first road shutout of Boston College since 1998 in a 3-0 win.
Boston University and Northeastern traded wins in a home-and-home set, with the Huskies earning four of the six points on offer in the series. Joe Connor scored with just 1:07 left in regulation on Friday to claim a Northeastern win. The Huskies’ Dylan Hryckowian then tallied a two-goal third-period to single-handedly force overtime on Saturday, before Terrier defender Cole Hutson secured the 4-3 OT win for BU.
New Hampshire split a series with No. 10 UConn as Jacob Newcombe posted one goal and one assist in a 4-3 win at No. 10 UConn on Saturday. He cut
the UConn lead to 3-2 in the second period with a power-play goal and he
recorded an assist on the strike that tied the game at 3-3 in the third period.
The night prior, UConn’s Ethan Gardula had a goal and an assist in a 4-1
Huskies’ win, which has kept them atop the Hockey East Standings.

Roger McQueen - Providence
Mikey DeAngelo (So., F; Itasca, Ill.) netted both goals for UMass in a 2-1 road win at Providence on Thursday night, helping the Minutemen secure their second win in Hockey East play.
Roger McQueen (Fr., F; Saskatoon,
Sask.) finished tied for first in the league
this week in goals (2) and points (3). On
Thursday, he scored the game-tying goal
with 2:47 left in regulation against UMass
to force overtime. On Saturday, he scored
the game-winning goal with 8:58 left in the
third period and added an assist in Providence’s 5-1 in on the road at UMass. He
finished the weekend with 11 shots on
goal, 21 faceoff wins and a plus-three rating.
PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Jacob Mathieu - Northeastern
Jacob Mathieu (Fr., F; St-Odilon, Que.) totaled two points as Northeastern came back from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime against No. 18
BU on the road Saturday night. He tallied NU’s opening goal on the
power-play with 2.7 seconds remaining in the first period and collected an assist on the Huskies’ second goal. He added seven shots, one
blocked shot, and went 23-for-44 (.523) at the faceoff circle. His eight
points in Hockey East action currently rank third among all league
rookies, while his six assists are tied for second.
ARMY ROTC DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Gavin McCarthy - Boston University
Gavin McCarthy (Jr., D; Clarence Center, N.Y.) picked up two primary assists on Saturday in a 4-3 win, including one on Cole Hutson’s
overtime winner. McCarthy led all Hockey East players with eight
blocked shots this past weekend and was tied for the conference lead
in plus-minus with a plus-three mark.
STOP IT GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Mathis Rousseau - Maine
Mathis Rousseau (Fr., G; Montreal, Que.) posted a 21-save shutout
for Maine in a 3-0 win at Boston College on Saturday, including 12
stops in the third period. It marked Maine’s first shutout of the Eagles
since 2004 and the Black Bears’ first road shutout at Boston College
since 1998.
HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS
Ryan Conmy, BC (Jr., F; Alexandria, Va.) Finished with two goals and one assist, all in the third period in a span of 6:16, to lead the Eagles to a 7-3 win over No. 10 Maine on Friday evening.
Lukas Gustafsson, BC (Sr., D; Atlanta, Ga.) Tallied two assists and blocked three shots on Friday evening before blocking another two shots on Saturday in a split weekend with Maine.
Louka Cloutier, BC (Fr., G; Sherbrooke, Que.) Posted a career-high 35 saves on Friday to help the Eagles earn a 7-3 victory over No. 10 Maine.
Cole Hutson, BU (So., D; Chicago, Ill.) Had two goals in a weekend series with Northeastern. Hutson potted both of his goals in Saturday night’s 4-3 overtime win over the Huskies, including the overtime strike. Hutson also blocked four shots. He was the only Hockey East defenseman to score two goals over the weekend.
Jonathan Morello, BU (Fr., F; Toronto, Ont.) Registered one point on one goal in a weekend series with Northeastern. He scored BU’s sixth shorthanded goal of the season in Saturday’s win. It was his second shorthanded tally of the year, tying him for the conference lead in shorthanded goals this season.
Miguel Marques, Maine (Fr., F; Prince George, B.C.) Had a two-goal, three-point weekend in a split at Boston College. He scored both goals, including the game-winning goal, in Saturday’s 3-0 win and had an assist on Friday.
Nick Pierre, MC (So., F; Cottage Grove, Minn.) Scored twice and had an assist in a 6-2 win at LIU on Friday.
Daniel Astapovich, MC (Fr., F; Birmingham, Mich.) Handed out two helpers in a 6-2 win at LIU on Friday.
Austin Oravetz, MC (Jr., D; Canonsburg, Pa.) Netted his first NCAA goal and added an assist in Merrimack’s 6-2 road win against LIU on Friday.
Max Lundgren, MC (Jr., G; Angelholm, Sweden) Earned his fifth win of the season with a 23-save effort in a 6-2 victory at LIU on Friday.
Jacob Newcombe, UNH (Fr., F; Sambro, N.S.) Posted one goal and one assist in a 4-3 win at No. 10 UConn on Saturday. He cut the UConn lead to 3-2 in the second period with a power-play goal and he recorded an assist on the strike that tied the game at 3-3 in the third period. Newcombe has two goals and three assists for five points this season.
Brendan Fitzgerald, UNH (Jr., D; North Reading, Mass.) Dished out two assists in a weekend split with No. 10 UConn. He recorded an assist on UNH’s lone goal in a 4-1 loss on Friday, while he tallied an assist on the game-winning goal in a 4-3 win at UConn.
Dylan Hryckowian, NU (Jr., F; Ile Bizard, Que.) Tallied a two-goal game to single-handedly force overtime on the road at No. 18 Boston University on Saturday night. He scored back-to-back goals in the third period to tie the game at three. He added 12 shots on goal and one blocked shot over the weekend.
Joe Connor, NU (So., F; Nottingham, N.H.) Collected a two-point weekend as the Huskies took four league points from No.18 BU. He scored the game-winning goal on Friday night with 1:07 left in regulation to secure a 3-2 victory. He the added an assist on the Huskies’ power-play goal on Saturday night to cut the BU lead in half. He finished the weekend with six shots and three blocks.
Dylan Finlay, NU (Sr., D; Montreal, Que.) Recorded his first multi-point game (2a) in a 3-2 victory over No. 18 BU and had an assist on both game-tying goals in game one against the Terriers on Friday night. He finished the weekend with three blocks and one shot on goal.
Quentin Sigurdson, NU (So., G; Sartell, Minn.) In his first series of the season, he went 1-1-0 to help the Huskies to a four-point weekend over the No. 18 BU Terriers. He made 75 saves for a .926 save percentage, including a career-high 43 saves on Saturday night in a 4-3 overtime setback. He kicked out 32 saves in NU’s 3-2 home victory on Friday night.
Philip Svedeback, PC (Sr., G; Vaxjo, Sweden) Stopped 47-of-50 shots he faced over two games last weekend, posting a 1.45 GAA and .940 save percentage. He stopped 28-of-30 on Thursday before responding with a 19-of-20 effort in the Friars’ 5-1 win at UMass on Saturday. In seven league games this season, he has posted a 1.84 GAA and .930 save percentage.
