AMESBURY, Mass. - The Hockey East Association saw 19 current players and commitments selected in the 2025 National Hockey League Entry Draft, representing seven of the 11 Hockey East member schools and highlighted by three players who developed in Hockey East in 2024-25, including two first round selections. A full list of players can be found below.
The selections were underlined by eight picks in the first two rounds, including three first-round choices in James Hagens (Boston College/Boston), Vaclav Nestrasil (Massachusetts/Chicago), and Sascha Boumedienne (Boston University/Winnipeg). The Hagens selection gives Boston College at least one player selected for the 30th consecutive draft, extending their all-time NCAA record set last year. Hagens and Boumedienne played in Hockey East during 2024-25.
In all, 76 current, committed and former NCAA Division I players were selected during the 2025 NHL Draft, college hockey’s biggest number since the NHL went to its seven-round draft format in 2005. Sixty-six of those picks came Saturday during rounds two through seven after 10 players had been chosen during Friday’s first round. Boston University had the second-most picks of any NCAA school with seven selections. Five of the seven rounds featured at least 10 college hockey players taken, topped by the 13 selections in rounds two and seven, while Hockey East had at least one player selected in all seven rounds.
The impressive showing at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft concludes a record-breaking 2024-25 NHL season for Hockey East alumni. In total, a record 123 Hockey East alumni appeared in at least one NHL game, representing over one-third of the 340 NCAA alumni to play in the NHL last season. All 11 current men’s member institutions had at least one former player represented. In addition, all 32 NHL teams had at least one Hockey East product in the lineup at some point during the regular season. Hockey East boasts over 100 NHL players for the fourth year in a row.
Additionally, Hockey East produced each of the major award winners for the 2024-25 NHL season, including Hart Trophy and three-time Vezina winner Connor Hellebuyck (UMass Lowell/Winnipeg), two-time Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar (Massachusetts/Colorado) and Rookie of the Year Lane Hutson (Boston University/Montreal). Hutson’s former Terrier teammate and 2024 number one overall pick Macklin Celebrini was also a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie.
The Hockey East Association saw nine alumni raise the 2025 Stanley Cup, as the Florida Panthers claimed the National Hockey League’s top prize for the second straight year. The league products include three players and six members of the Panthers front office staff and it marks the 15th straight year that at least one Hockey East alumnus will have their name engraved on the Stanley Cup. The players included Evan Rodrigues (Boston University, 2011-15), Brandon Montour (Massachusetts. 2014-15), and Ryan Lomberg (Maine, 2012-14). Leading Florida in the front office was Assistant GM Brett Peterson (Boston College, 2000-04), Senior Advisor to the GM Paul Fenton (Boston University, 1979-82), Manager, Player Development Mike Ryan (Northeastern, 1999-03), Amateur Scout P.J. Fenton (Massachusetts, 2004-08), Amateur Scout Josh Monk (Providence, 2013-17) and Director of European Pro Scouting Oleg Yevenko (Massachusetts, 2011-15).
