AMESBURY, Mass. - A record-tying six teams from the Hockey East Association have earned bids into the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament, it was announced today by the NCAA. The NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee selected the 16 teams that will be participating in the 2025 Men’s Ice Hockey Championship.
The six teams tie an all-time record of representation from one conference and matches Hockey East’s 2016 field and includes two No. 1 seeds in Boston College and Maine and three No. 2 seeds in Boston University, UConn and Providence. The historic showing increases Hockey East’s record of 133 NCAA Tournament field selections which sits 37 clear of the next active conference’s number.
At least two Hockey East teams have qualified for the Frozen Four in 15 of the conference’s 40 seasons, surpassing other the competition in that span, while at least one Hockey East team has appeared in the National Championship Game in 21 of the last 32 years. Hockey East was represented by at least one team in the NCAA championship game in each of eight straight years from 1997 to 2004. That is the most consecutive appearances in the title game by any conference since the inception of Hockey East in 1984-85. Since regional tournament play began, 35 of the 60 teams that have advanced to the Frozen Four from the eastern regional tournaments have been from Hockey East.
The championship playoff format involves four predetermined regional sites, including Manchester, N.H., Allentown, Pa., Toledo, Ohio, and Fargo, N.D., with four teams assigned to each site. The four regional winners advance to the Men’s Frozen Four. The entire championship uses a single-elimination format.
Boston College has earned the No. 1 overall seed and will play in Manchester, N.H. The other No. 1 seeds include Michigan State, Maine, and Western Michigan.
