HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

#2 Boston College completed a two-game road sweep of #10 St. Cloud State, toppling the NCHC foe thanks in part to three goals, including two game-winners, from Gabe Perreault. James Hagens dished out four helpers, including on both decisive tallies.

Zachary Borgiel turned in the goaltending performance of the season so far, backboning Providence to a 3-0 victory at New Hampshire on Saturday by making 43 saves. The Friars took all six points from the Wildcats in the weekend sweep.

Maine exploded for 11 goals on offense while denying every shot faced from Merrimack in a weekend sweep by scores of 5-0 and 6-0. Harrison Scott racked up seven points, including three goals and four assists, while Albin Boija turned aside all 30 shots he faced from the Warriors.

Vermont’s sophomore goaltender Axel Mangbo earned his first NCAA win and shutout in thrilling fashion, turning aside all 30 shots he faced from UConn in a 1-0 overtime victory on Saturday at the XL Center in Hartford. The next day, UConn took a 6-5 overtime decision in Storrs in an instant classic that saw five first-period goals and four third-period strikes, including a buzzer beater from Vermont to force the extra frame. The Huskies’ Ethan Gardula scored two goals and added an assist on the overtime winner.

#17 Massachusetts took a 4-3 win at AIC on Saturday by way of a three-goal first period and a power-play strike from Dans Locmelis. Michael Hrabel turned aside 44 shots on the day.

UMass Lowell completed a raging comeback on Friday at Holy Cross, erasing a 3-0 deficit and taking a 5-4 victory in overtime. Jak Vaarwerk assisted on the game-tying goal before scoring the game-winner in overtime.

Harrison Scott - Maine

Gabe Perreault (So., F; Hinsdale, Ill.) scored three times, including both two game-winning goals, over the course of a weekend sweep for the Eagles at #10 St. Cloud State. Perreault tallied a power-play goal and an empty-net goal in a 4-1 victory on Friday before scoring a third-period goal to complete a comeback in Saturday’s 2-1 win.

Harrison Scott (Sr., F; San Jose, Calif.) led Hockey East in points (7) while tying for first in goals (3) and assists (4) in a sweep of Merrimack. He had a goal and two assists on Friday night and followed it up with two goals and two assists on Saturday. Scott finished with nine shots on goal and one power-play goal while winning 15 faceoffs.


PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

James Hagens - Boston College

James Hagens (Fr., F; Hauppauge, N.Y.) finished the weekend road sweep of #10 St. Cloud with four points after recording two assists in each of the Eagles’ two victories in Minnesota. Both helpers set up the game-winning goals for Boston College.

Axel Mangbo (So., G; Molle, Sweden) made 30 saves Saturday afternoon, earning his first career win and shutout with a 1-0 overtime win at UConn.

Zachary Borgiel - Merrimack

Zachary Borgiel (Gr., G; Fort Gratiot, Mich.), in his only start of the weekend, pitched a 43-save shutout at UNH on Saturday night for a 3-0 win in one of the top goaltending performances of the season. He made several highlight reel saves, while 18 of his saves came during penalty kills.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Eamon Powell, BC (Gr., D; Marcellus, N.Y.) Recorded one goal and one assist with two blocked shots for the Eagles in a sweep of St. Cloud State. Powell’s goal on Saturday came on the power play and was the game-tying goal, setting up a two-goal come back win for BC.

Jacob Fowler, BC (So., G; Melbourne, Fla.) Made 44 saves across two wins at #10 St. Cloud State. Fowler made 19 saves on Friday evening followed by 25 saves on Saturday evening, picking up the win in both contests while allowing just one goal in each game.

Cole Eiserman, BU (Fr., F; Newburyport, Mass.) Tallied his fifth goal of the season on Friday and added an assist the next night to complete a two-point weekend. He continues to lead all league rookies with five goals.

Alex Zetterberg, BU (Fr., F; Sundsvall, Sweden) Collected a career-high two points with a goal and an assist against Michigan on Saturday night.

Ethan Gardula, UConn (Fr., F; Princeton, Mass.) Scored two goals and added an assist to help UConn defeat Vermont in overtime on Sunday in a 6-5 instant classic.

Brandon Holt, Maine (Jr., D; Grand Forks, N.D.) Helped Maine to a weekend sweep of Merrimack, backboning a defense that posted two shutouts. He recorded four assists and a plus-five rating on the weekend, including two assists on Friday, including on the game-winning goal. He followed up with had two assists on Saturday, also assisting on the game-winning goal. He added three shots and two blocked shots.

Albin Boija, Maine (So., G; Sundsvall, Sweden) Posted two wins and stopped all 30 shots he faced on the weekend, not allowing a single goal in a weekend sweep of Merrimack. He made 15 saves for a shutout on Friday and made 15 saves more in 52:33 of action on Saturday, giving up no goals before giving way to teammate Patriks Berzins, who made his NCAA debut over the final 7:00.

Jak Vaarwerk, UML (So., F; Clarence, N.Y.) Assisted on the game-tying goal in the second period of a 5-4 overtime win at Holy Cross, before scoring the game-winner in overtime. He finished with two points and went 16-for-25 (64%) from the faceoff circle.

Chris Delaney, UML (Fr., F; Hopkinton, Mass.) Continued his hot rookie campaign Friday night for the River Hawks, helping the team to a 5-4 overtime win at Holy Cross. He scored to tie the game at three in the second period, giving him his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

Isac Jonsson, UML (Sr., D; Angelholm, Sweden) Collected two assists in a 5-4 overtime in at Holy Cross. He had a helper on each of the team’s first two goals, helping spark the comeback victory.

Henry Welsch, UML (Gr., G; Lakeville, Minn.) Stayed unbeaten on the year after earning a road win Friday night at Holy Cross to move to 5-0-0 between the pipes. He entered the game with nine minutes remaining in the first period and made 24 saves throughout the remainder of the game to help the River Hawks pick up the 5-4 overtime win after being down, 3-0.

Ryan Conmy, UNH (So., F; Alexandria, Va.) Scored two goals at Providence on Friday, netting the first and third goal of the game for the Wildcats. This was second career two-goal game and his 12th multi-point game. He has posted at least one point in four of the five games he has played in this season with four goals and two assists for six points.

Logan Will, PC (Gr., F; Ames, Iowa) Finished the weekend with a goal and four assists as the Friars swept UNH to capture all six Hockey East points. Will also finished tied for a league-best plus-five rating.

Will Elger, PC (Fr., F; Westerville, Ohio) Continued his hot start to the year with two goals, one assist and a plus-two rat- ing in a weekend sweep over New Hampshire. He tallied the game-winning goal in Saturday night’s 3-0 win and has now scored a goal in four-consecutive games.
