HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES
#2 Boston College began the season with a 3-0 shutout win at #4 Michigan State. Jacob Fowler posted a 24-save shutout, his fourth career blank sheet, and the first time since 2010 in which the Eagles posted a shutout in the season opener. Will Vote scored two goals in the victory.
#3 Boston University began its season-opening winning streak with a 4-1 win over Union on Saturday night. Mathieu Caron made 17 of his 36 stops in the first period to help BU get out to a 3-0 lead, while rookie Alex Zetterberg scored for the second time in as many games as a Terrier en route to victory.
UMass Lowell split a series with Minnesota Duluth, thanks in part to four points (1g, 3a) from Ben Meehan. Meehan scored the game-winning goal in Saturday’s 4-1 triumph.
#14 Massachusetts took third place in the Ice Breaker Tournament, held in Las Vegas. Cole O’Hara led the Minutemen with four points, including a assist in a 3-2 OT loss to #15 Omaha and two goals and an assist in a 5-1 win over Air Force.
New Hampshire kicked off its season with a 2-1 overtime victory over Bentley and are now 5-0-1 over the Wildcats’ last six season openers, including wins in four straight. Ryan Conmy contributed to both UNH goals as he scored to give the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead in the first period and posted the primary assist on the overtime winner.
#18 Northeastern toppled Stonehill, 5-1, as Jack Williams recorded a three-point weekend in the Huskies’ home opener win, tallying two goals in just under two minutes.
Merrimack earned a weekend split with #19 Minnesota State as Max Lundgren pitched a 27-save shutout in a 1-0 win in his collegiate debut. Tyler Young scored the lone goal for the Warriors in Friday night’s road victory.
HOCKEY EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cole O’Hara - Massachusetts
Cole O’Hara (Jr., F; Richmond Hill, Ont.) led UMass in scoring at the Ice
Breaker Tournament where the Minutemen went 1-1-0 with an 3-2 overtime
loss to #15 Omaha and a 5-1 win over Air Force. He represented UMass on
the Ice Breaker All-Tournament Team after an assist against Omaha and a
career high three-point night against Air Force, which included two goals, the
game-winning power-play goal and an empty net goal. He also registered
one block against the Falcons.
PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Colin Kessler - Vermont
Colin Kessler (Fr., F; Anchorage, Alaska) had two goals in his collegiate debut Friday at St. Thomas. He scored the first Catamounts goal of the season
as they tied the Tommies, 5-5.
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Ben Meehan - UMass Lowell
Ben Meehan (Gr., D; Walpole, Mass.) finished a two-game series split with
Minnesota Duluth with four points. He tallied two assists in game one, and
added a goal and an assist in Saturday’s 4-1 victory, including the game-winning goal.
STOP IT GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Jacob Fowler - Boston College
Jacob Fowler (So., G; Melbourne, Fla.) posted a 24-save shutout in the 3-0
season-opening victory at #4 Michigan State. It was his fourth career shutout
and the first time since 2010 in which the Eagles posted a shutout in the season opener. On Saturday against the Spartans, Fowler made 25 saves for a
weekend total of 49.
HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS
Will Vote, BC (So., F; Arlington, Mass.) Played a key role for Boston College in its 3-0 season-opening victory over #4 Michigan State. Vote scored the first two goals of the game in the second period.
James Hagens, BC (Fr., F; Hauppauge, N.Y.) In his first collegiate weekend, Hagens registered an assist in both contests against national #4 Michigan State in a split road weekend for the Eagles.
Lukas Gustafsson, BC (Jr., D; Atlanta, Ga.) Had the primary assist on the game-winning goal in the season-opening victory over Michigan State. He then went on to score the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season the following night against the Spartans.
Jack Harvey, BU (So., F; Stacy, Minn.) Lit the lamp and had the primary assist on Alex Zetterberg’s game-winning goal in the Terriers’ 4-1 victory over Union on Saturday.
Alex Zetterberg, BU (Fr., F; Sundsvall, Sweden) Scored for the second time in as many games, notching the game-winning goal in a 4-1 victory over Union on Saturday.
Cole Hutson, BU (Fr., D; Chicago, Ill.) Recorded a highlight-reel assist to set up Cole Eiserman’s goal in the first period of the Terriers’ 4-1 win over Union on Saturday.
Mathieu Caron, BU (Sr., G; Abbotsford, B.C.) Made 17 of his 36 stops of a 4-1 season-opening win over Union in the first period to help BU get out to a 3-0 lead, with several of those 17 first-period saves from point-blank range. He made an additional 12 saves to keep Union scoreless over the final 20 minutes.
Chris Delaney, UML (Fr., F; Hopkinton, Mass.) Scored the first two goals of his career this weekend against Minnesota Duluth, both coming in a 4-2 setback on Friday.
Henry Welsch, UML (Gr., G; Lakeville, Minn.) Earned the win on Saturday against Minnesota Duluth, allowing just one goal with 20 saves for a .952 save percentage.
Ryan Conmy, UNH (So., F; Alexandria, Va.) Contributed to both UNH goals with one goal and one assist for two points as the Wildcats defeated Bentley, 2-1, in overtime in the season opener on Oct. 12. He scored UNH’s first goal of the season to give the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead in the first period, while he posted the primary assist on the overtime winner. Conmy’s two-point performance was his 11th multiple point game of his career.
Jared Whale, UNH (Jr., G; Calgary, Alta.) Made 23 saves as he earned the win in his UNH debut as the ‘Cats defeated Bentley, 2-1, in overtime in the season opener on Oct. 12. He recorded a 0.97 goals against average and a .958 save percentage.
Jack Williams, NU (Jr., F; Biddeford, Maine) Recorded a three-point weekend in the Huskies’ home opener win, a 5-1 victory over Stonehill. He tallied two goals in just under two minutes and one assist. He led both teams with 12 face-off wins and five shots on goal and finished plus-three on the night.
Vinny Borgesi, NU (Jr., D; Philadelphia, Pa.) Recorded the game-winning goal and an assist in a 5-1 win. He tacked on three shots, two blocks and was plus-two. He has now scored in every home opener since his freshman season, including two game-winners.
Braiden Clark, PC (Fr., F; Columbus, Ohio) Scored his first-career goal in his NCAA debut on Saturday at North Dakota, tying the game in the first period.
