AMESBURY, Mass. – There have been 82 Hockey East alumni named to National Hockey League rosters for opening night of the 2024-25 season, it was announced this week by the NHL. In total, 30 of the 32 member clubs carry at least one Hockey East alumnus on their roster. A full list of players can be found below.
The 82 players represent every Hockey East member institution, led by Boston University (17), Boston College (17), Northeastern (11), and Massachusetts (10). Rounding out the schools are Providence (8), New Hampshire (5), Maine (4), UMass Lowell (3), UConn (1), Merrimack (1), and Vermont (1). Additionally, four Notre Dame skaters who competed in Hockey East earned NHL roster spots.
The Pittsburgh Penguins boast seven Hockey East alumni, the most of any NHL club, while the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens each carry six Hockey East players on their rosters. In total, 22 of the 32 clubs carry at least two league products.
The roster data includes players who are on injured reserve or long-term injured reserve to open the season, or who have been designated injured non-roster.
The Hockey East Association saw 14 current players and recruits selected in the 2024 National Hockey League Entry Draft, representing five of the 11 Hockey East member schools, and highlighted by reigning Hockey East Player of the Year Macklin Celebrini, who became the second-ever Hockey East product to be picked first overall. Boston University is the first NCAA school to have two players go first overall in the NHL Draft, following goaltender Rick DiPietro (NYI) in 2000.
The selections were underlined by nine picks in the first two rounds, including four first-round choices in Celebrini, and freshmen Trevor Connelly (Providence/Vegas), Cole Eiserman (Boston University/NYI), and Dean Letourneau (Boston College/Boston). The Letourneau pick gives Boston College at least one player selected for the 29th consecutive draft, setting a new all-time NCAA record.
Twenty-six of the NHL’s 32 franchises drafted at least one current or committed NCAA player. Colorado had the most with five, followed by Buffalo, Chicago and Detroit with four each. There have now been 77 first-round picks from the NCAA over the last 10 NHL Drafts (2015-24) compared to 54 first-rounders over the previous 10 drafts (2005-14). The impressive showing at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft concludes a record-breaking 2023-24 NHL season for Hockey East alumni. In total, 107 Hockey East alumni appeared in at least one NHL game, representing nearly one-third of the 325 NCAA alumni to play in the NHL last season. All 11 current men’s member institutions had at least one former player represented. In addition, all 32 NHL teams had at least one Hockey East product in the lineup at some point during the regular season. Hockey East claimed eight 2024 NHL All-Stars, and boasts over 100 NHL players for the third year in a row.
Hockey East Association saw 10 alumni raise the 2024 Stanley Cup, as the Florida Panthers claimed the National Hockey League’s top prize. The league products include five players and five members of the Panthers front office staff and it marks the 14th straight year that at least one Hockey East product will have their name engraved on the Stanley Cup. The players included Evan Rodrigues (Boston University, 2011-15), Brandon Montour (Massachusetts. 2014-15), Ryan Lomberg, Maine, (2012-14), Spencer Knight, (Boston College, 2019-21), and Patrick Giles (Boston College, 2018-22). Leading Florida in the front office was Assistant GM Brett Peterson (Boston College, 2000-04), Senior Advisor to the GM Paul Fenton, (Boston University, 1979-82), Manager, Player Development Mike Ryan, (Northeastern, 1999-03), Amateur Scout P.J. Fenton, (Massachusetts, 2004-08), and Amateur Scout Josh Monk, (Providence, 2013-17).
