HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Maine extended its unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1) with a 1-0-1 weekend against Colgate. Thomas Freel notched a three-point game to help the Black Bears’ erase a three-goal deficit on Saturday. He scored twice in the span of 19 seconds, including an unassisted short-handed goal. Rookie goaltender Albin Boija posted a 1.06 goals against average, .964 save percentage and 53-save weekend.

New Hampshire picked up two wins over Princeton, moving to 11-5-1 on the year for the best start since the Wildcats went 12-3-2 in 2012-13. Mike Souza’s team is 8-1-1 at home and earned a 7-3-0 mark against non-conference opponents.

UMass Lowell took third place in the Desert Hockey Classic at Arizona State, toppling Harvard, 7-4, after falling to Omaha in overtime, 4-3. Sophomore Nick Rheaume collected four points (2g, 2a) as he scored the opening goal against Omaha, before collecting a the game-winning power-play goal and two assists against the Crimson.

Northeastern skated to a 3-3 tie with No. 3 Quinnipiac on Saturday, powered by a career-high three points (1g, 2a) from Dylan Hryckowian. The rookie forward dished out two primary helpers and scored the game-tying, shorthanded goal in the third period.

Nick Rheaume - UMass Lowell

Nick Rheaume (So., F; Trois-Rivieres, Que.) finished the two-game Desert Hockey Classic at Arizona State with four points (2g, 2a). He scored the opening goal in a game-one overtime loss to Omaha, before collecting a the game-winning power-play goal and two assists in a 7-4 victory over Harvard in game two.

Dylan Hryckowian - Northeastern

Dylan Hryckowian (Fr., F: Île Bizard, Que.) recorded a career-high three-points en route to helping the Huskies to a 3-3 tie with No. 3 Quinnipiac. He tallied two primary assists on Northeastern’s opening goals and scored the game-tying goal on a short-handed breakaway at 11:30 of the third period. He finished with four shots and a plus-one rating and is leading all Northeastern rookies in points (11), goals (2), and assists (9).

Alex Gagne - New Hampshire

Alex Gagne (Jr., D; Bedford, N.H.) posted two assists for two points and led the team with six blocks as UNH went 2-0-0 against Princeton last weekend. He was a member of a defense that only allowed three goals over two games. He tallied an assist on the first goal of the game and recorded two blocks on Friday in the 5-2 win, while he led all players with four blocks and added an assist in a 3-1 win on Saturday.

Jakob Hellsten - New Hampshire
Albin Boija - Maine

Jakob Hellsten (Jr., G; Ljusdal, Sweden) collected two wins over Princeton with a 1.50 goals against average and a .925 save percentage, making 37 saves on 40 shots from the Tigers. Hellsten made 21 saves and allowed two goals on Friday in a 5-2 win, while he posted 16 saves and allowed one goal on Saturday as UNH won 3-1. He leads Hockey East and is second in the nation with a 1.79 goals against average and improved to 7-2-1 on the season.

Albin Boija (Fr., G; Sundsval, Sweden) posted a 1.06 goals against average, .964 save percentage and 53-save weekend, going 1-0-1. He earned a 30-save 3-1 a win in a Friday night start and played 53:39 of work in Saturday’s relief appearance, stopping 23 of 24 shots he faced in a 4-4 tie. He was tops in Hockey East in save percentage and goals against average and second in saves.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Gavin McCarthy, BU (Fr., D; Clarence Center, N.Y.) Scored the Terriers’ lone goal in regulation and then notched the only goal in the shootout for Boston University in the Terriers’ exhibition against Simon Fraser.

Max Lacroix, BU (Fr., G; Denver, Colo.) Making his first-ever appearance for the Terriers, Lacroix made 14 saves in a 1-1 exhibition with Simon Fraser. He then stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout.

Tom Messineo, UConn (So., D; Weswood, Mass.) Dished out two helpers, his second consecutive two-assist game, in a 3-3 tie at UMass. He blocked three shots and helped force overtime as UConn earned the extra point in a shootout.

Joey Muldowney, UConn (Fr., F; Lake View, N.Y.) Potted his first career goal in a 3-3 draw at UMass on Friday.

Thomas Freel, Maine (So., F; Aberdeen, Scotland) Notched a three-point game in Maine’s three-goal comeback tie on Saturday. He scored twice in the span of 19 seconds, including an unassisted short-handed goal and added six shots on net, a team-leading and second in the league four blocked shots and plus-three rating on the weekend.

Ryan Hopkins, Maine (Fr., D; Lunenburg, N.S.) Scored his first career goal on Friday night and recorded four shots on net, one blocked shot and a plus-two rating on the weekend.

Jak Vaarwerk, UML (Fr., F; Clarence, N.Y.) Scored his second career goal in a 7-4 win over Harvard.

Isac Jonsson, UML (Jr., D; Angelholm, Sweden) Registered two points (1g, 1a) in the Desert Hockey Classic. He scored in game one, before picking up an assist in the team’s game two victory.

Ryan Conmy, UNH (Fr., F; Alexandria, Va.) Netted two goals and added an assist in a two-game sweep of Princeton. He recorded his eighth multi-point game of the season in a 5-2 win on Friday and scored an insurance goal in Saturday’s 3-1 victory.
