HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Frozen Fenway 2023 proved to be a significant success over the weekend, welcoming over 25,000 fans across two days of college hockey competition. The men’s double-header on Saturday saw 22,501 fans watch Northeastern and Boston College claim victories at America’s most beloved ballpark, the first iteration of the event since 2017.

Boston College toppled UMass, 4-2, on Saturday’s night cap from Fenway Park. Boxborough native Cam Burke scored his first two goals in an Eagles’ uniform, including the game-winner, to seal the victory.

New Hampshire earned a pair of wins, including a 2-0 road victory over #11 Providence, thanks in part to the goaltending of David Fessenden. The senior made 58 saves and pitched a 35-save shutout. Nikolai Jenson dished out two assists and blocked five shots.

Maine swept Alaska Anchorage, 1-0 and 4-3, and are now 6-1-1 in their last eight outings. Victor Ostman has two shutouts in that stretch and has won each of his last six starts.

UMass Lowell claimed victory over AIC on Saturday, powered by Carl Berglund’s two assists, including one on the game winning goal. He now has five points in his last five games and leads the team in all three scoring categories with eight goals and nine assists for 17 points.

Cam Burke - Boston College

Cam Burke (Gr., F; Boxborough, Mass.) scored the first two goals of his Boston College career, pacing the Eagles’ offense in a 4-2 win over No. 15 UMass at Frozen Fenway on Saturday night in front of 22,501 fans at Fenway Park. His second goal of the game proved to be the game-winning tally. He added three shots on net and finished a plus-one.

Jack Williams - Northeastern

Cutter Gauthier (Fr., F; Scottsdale, Ariz.) picked up two points (1g, 1a) at Frozen Fenway in his first game back from duty with Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championship. He opened the scoring in front of 22,501 fans at Fenway Park with his 11th goal of the season, leading the Eagles to a 4-2 win over No. 15 UMass. He had a career-high nine shots on net and won seven of nine faceoffs.

Jack Williams (Fr., F; Biddeford, Maine) scored a goal and added an assist in a 4-1 win over No. 9/10 UConn at Frozen Fenway. Put three shots on net and won two of his three faceoffs on the night.

Nikolai Jenson - New Hampshire

Nikolai Jenson (Jr., D; Cold Spring, Minn.) was a member of a defense that only allowed one goal in two games. He posted two assists for two points and led the team with five blocked shots. He also tied for first on the team with a plus-four rating. Jenson totaled three blocks at No. 11 Providence in a 2-0 win, while he had two assists and two blocks against Sacred Heart in the 4-1 win.

David Fessenden - New Hampshire

David Fessenden (Sr., G; Parker, Colo.) was outstanding in net with a 2-0-0 record on the week. He made 58 saves and only allowed one goal for a .983 save percentage and a 0.50 goals against average. Fessenden made 35 saves as the Wildcats won at No. 11 Providence, 2-0, on Friday. This was the first shutout for Fessenden as a Wildcat and the second of his collegiate career. His 18 saves during the third period are the most he has posted in a period as a Wildcat. On Sunday he made 23 saves and allowed one goal in the 4-1 win over Sacred Heart at the Whittemore Center.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Mitch Benson, BC (Gr., G; Windsor, Ont.) Stopped 23 of 25 shots he faced in a 4-2 victory over No. 15 UMass at Frozen Fenway on Saturday night. He made nine stops in the third period alone and allowed just two power-play strikes to earn his eighth win of the year.

Wilmer Skoog, BU (Sr., F; Tyreso, Sweden) Scored two goals, including the game-winner, in the Terriers’ 5-1 win over Air Force on Friday at the Desert Hockey Classic.

Jeremy Wilmer, BU (Fr., F; Rockville Center, N.Y.) Led Hockey East in assists (4) and points (4) this past weekend, a split series at the Desert Hockey Classic. All four of his assists were primary assists, including a career-high three helpers in the Terriers’ 5-1 win over Air Force on Friday. He also had a beautiful stretch pass to set up Matt Brown’s goal against No. 16 Michigan Tech on Saturday.

Lane Hutson, BU (Fr., D; North Barrington, Ill.) Had an assist in each game this past weekend for the Terriers as he flew from Nova Scotia to Arizona to rejoin the team a day after providing the primary assist on the goal that won USA the bronze medal at the IIHF World Junior Championship.

Carl Berglund, UML (Sr., F; Hammaro, Sweden) Led the River Hawks with two assists, including one on the game winning goal, in the team’s 4-2 victory over AIC on Saturday afternoon. He finished with four shots and a plus-one rating He now has five points in his last five games and leads the team in all three scoring categories with eight goals and nine assists for 17 points.

Owen Fowler, UML (Fr., F; Tewksbury, Mass.) Scored the game-winning goal in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over American International and ended the afternoon with three shots and a plus-one rating.

Marek Korencik, UML (Sr., D; Zilina, Sweden) Netted an unassisted goal in Saturday’s 4-2 win over AIC, he ended the night with two shots, one block and a plus-two rating.

Gustavs Davis Grigals, UML (Gr., G; Riga, Latvia) Made 32 saves to help lift the River Hawks to a 4-2 win over AIC on Saturday afternoon and improved to a 6-4-1. He now leads the conference in both GAA (1.86) and save percentage (.932), which also ranks second in the NCAA.

Will Calverley, MC (Gr., F; Scarborough, Ont.) Scored two goals, including the 50th of his collegiate career and had one assist for three points in Merrimack’s 3-3 tie against Yale on Friday. He netted the game-tying goal with 4:51 left in regulation.

Christian Felton, MC (Jr., D; Medina, Ohio) Had a goal and an assist in a 0-1-1 weekend for Merrimack, including scoring to kick off a two-goal rally in the third period to earn a 3-3 tie with Yale on Friday.

Zachary Borgiel, MC (Jr., G; Fort Gratiot, Mich.) Made 12 saves to stay unbeaten and move to 8-0-1 on the year in Merrimack‘s 3-3 tie against Yale on Friday. He then made 15 saves in relief in a 6-2 loss to Brown the next day.

Cy LeClerc, UNH (Fr., F; Brentwood, N.H.) Scored the game winner in a 2-0 win at No. 11 Providence on Friday, while he also found the back of the net in the 4-1 win over Sacred Heart at the Whittemore Center on Sunady. He currently leads the team with 10 goals and is tied for first with 16 points.

Aidan McDonough, NU (Sr., F; Milton, Mass.) Recorded a multiple-point (1g, 1a) night in Northeastern’s 4-1 win over No. 9/10 UConn as a part of 2023 Frozen Fenway. He tallied the first goal of the night and picked up an assist on Justin Hryckowian’s goal to take a two-goal lead. He finished with seven shots on goal and has now recorded at least two points in the last four meetings with UConn for a total of 11 (6g, 5a) including a hat trick. McDonough already has four points (2g, 2a) in two games in 2023 and sits atop of Hockey East alone with 19 points (8g, 11a).

Devon Levi, NU (Jr., G; Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que.) Earned his ninth win of the year and 30th of his career with a 4-1 win on Saturday with 29 stops. He leads Hockey East play with seven wins and 371 saves.
