Final Month of Regular Season Play Begins With Tight Playoff Hunt

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

Merrimack earned a crucial six points in league play to move into a tie for fourth in the Army ROTC Hockey East Standings. Max Newton had five points in two games, including a single game career-high tying four points (1g, 3a) Saturday while Hugo Ollas earned his first collegiate shutout Saturday night against Maine, making 28 saves.

UMass Lowell picked up two wins, including a thrilling come-from-behind road win at Boston College on Friday. Owen Cole picked up his first career goal on a shorthanded opportunity Friday and dished out a pair of assists for his first career multi-point game to help UMass Lowell secure a 6-3 win over Dartmouth on Saturday.

Northeastern battled back with a furious four-goal third period to secure a 5-4 win over Vermont Friday night. Sam Colangelo was the Huskies’ top point-scorer against Vermont with his second three-point game of the season (1g, 2a). He assisted on the opening goal of the game, the game-tying goal by Harris, and knotted the eventual game-winner late in the third.

UConn earned six points in the Army ROTC Hockey East Standings to remain just four points out of second place and within striking distance of first place, eight points back of UMass Lowell. Ryan Tverberg helped fuel the Huskies with four points on a goal and an assist in both games.

Massachusetts swept Long Island University in a two-game, non-conference set. Bobby Trivigno led the Minutemen to a weekend sweep of LIU with five points on a goal and four assists and a plus-four rating, including a helper on the game-winning goal on Friday. All five points came in Friday’s 6-3 win over the Sharks as it marked the first five-point game by a Minuteman since James Marcou had five assists at Vermont on November 24, 2009.

Bobby Trivigno - Massachusetts

Bobby Trivigno (Sr., F; Setauket, N.Y.) led the Minutemen to a weekend sweep of LIU with five points on a goal and four assists and a plus-four rating, including a helper on the game-winning goal on Friday. All five points came in Friday’s 6-3 win over the Sharks as it marked the first five-point game by a Minuteman since James Marcou had five assists at Vermont on November 24, 2009.

Hugo Ollas - Merrimack

Hugo Ollas (Fr., G: Linkoping, Sweden) picked up where he left off from January with his first collegiate shutout Saturday night at Lawler Rink against Maine. The first-year netminder kicked out all 28 shots he faced and now has a 5-1-0 record, 1.30 goals against average and .949 save percentage since the new year. He ranks fourth in the nation among freshman goalies with a 2.13 goals against average and .921 save percentage on the year.

Brehdan Engum - UMass Lowell

Brehdan Engum (So., D; Burnsville, Minn.) handed out two assists, blocked three shots and earned a plus-five rating in two games to help UMass Lowell earn a pair of wins this weekend. On Friday, Engum doled out an assist on Owen Cole’s game-tying shorthanded goal and made one block to help the River Hawks secure the come-from-behind win at Boston College. He then dished another helper on UMass Lowell’s empty netter to cap the 6-3 victory and added a pair of blocks on Saturday.

Vinny Duplessis - Boston University

Vinny Duplessis (So., G; Quebec City, Que.) stopped all 27 shots he faced in his first career start at Agganis Arena to lead BU to a 4-0 victory over Maine on Friday. Duplessis made 15 of his 27 saves in the third period. It was his second career shutout for the Terriers and just his third start of the season.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Robert Mastrosimone, BU (Jr., F; East Islip, N.Y.) Tallied two goals and added an assist for a three-point effort in the Terriers’ 4-0 win over Maine, including a nifty redirection of a Domenick Fensore shot to close the scoring for BU. The two goals and three points matched career highs for Mastrosimone, who now leads BU with 11 goals and 21 points.

Domenick Fensore, BU (Jr., D; Thornwood, N.Y.) Had the primary assist on one of Robert Mastrosimone’s goals in the Terriers’ 4-0 win over Maine on Friday. Fensore finished with a game-high three blocked shots.

Ryan Tverberg, UConn (So., F; Richmond Hill, Ont.) Helped fuel the Huskies six-point weekend with four points on a goal and an assist in both games. Down 1-0 to Providence, Tverberg helped set up the tying goal by John Spetz and in the third period and then scored on a break-away for the game-winner with under five minutes to play. On Saturday, he set up the first goal of the game on a feed to Hudson Schandor and capped off the night with a highlight reel goal, fighting off a defender while falling before getting back up and finishing the play.

John Spetz, UConn (So., D; Oak Ridge, N.J.) Scored a goal and added an assist in Friday’s 2-1 win over No. 17 Providence. He tied the game in the second period against the Friars and then helped start the play that broke Tverberg free for the game-winning break- away goal in the third.

Darion Hanson, UConn (GS., G; East Bethel, Minn.) Allowed just two goals over the weekend as the Huskies earned a 2-1 win over Providence and a 6-1 win on the road at UNH. In Friday’s victory, he stopped 20 of 21 shots and then came back on Saturday to shut out the Wildcats over the final two periods as UConn scored five-straight in that span. He stopped 14 in the first period and finished with 31 saves for the night.

Luke Pavicich, UMass (Fr., G; Clarence Center, N.Y.) Stopped 28 of 29 shots in his first collegiate start, picking up a 3-1 win over LIU on Saturday. He posted a 1.00 goals against average and a .966 save percentage on the week.

Zach Kaiser, UML (Jr., F; Orangeville, Ont.) Scored two goals and one assist for three points in two games. He finished the weekend with a block and a plus-three rating. On Friday, Kaiser notched the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left to lift the River Hawks to a 3-2 win at Boston College. The junior also dished out an assist on UMass Lowell’s first of the night against BC. He returned to the ice on Saturday night to add another goal to his weekend total and help the River Hawks take down Dartmouth in 6-3 decision.

Owen Cole, UML (Fr., F; Dunnville, Ont.) Had a standout weekend, registering a number of career firsts to help the River Hawks earn back-to-back wins. The rookie picked up a goal, two assists and a plus-two rating across the two outings. On Friday, Cole knocked in his first career goal on a shorthanded opportunity to tie the game on the way to the River Hawks picking up a 3-2 win at BC. On Saturday, Cole dished out a pair of assists for his first career multi-point game to help UMass Lowell secure a 6-3 win over Dartmouth.

Owen Savory, UML (Sr., G; Cambridge, Ont.) Led UMass Lowell to back-to-back wins, making 37 stops while allowing just five goals and move to a 15-3-2 record on the season. Ranked second in both save percentage (.929) and GAA (1.79). Nationally, Savory is tied for seventh in save percentage and sits in sixth in the nation in goals against average.

Max Newton, MC (GS, F; Vancouver, B.C.) Continued his dazzling season with five points in two games, including a single game career-high tying four points (1g, 3a) Saturday to help the Warriors to a perfect six-point weekend in league play. He notched the primary assist on Zach Vinnell’s power-play goal Friday to help Merrimack finish off New Hampshire, then he lit up the scoresheet Saturday. He played a hand in four of Merrimack’s five goals with a goal and an assist in the first period, then two more helpers in the third to drive the hosts’ 5-0 shutout win over Maine. He now has a team-leading 30 points on the season and is the first Warrior to reach the 30-point plateau since Brett Seney did it during the 2017-18 season.

Zach Vinnell, MC (Jr., D; Cochrane, Alta.) The junior rearguard did it all for Merrimack during their perfect six-point home weekend. He scored a power-play goal Friday and added an assist on the man advantage, to help the Warriors to a 5-2 win over New Hampshire. The following night, he notched another power-play point when he had a helper on Ben Brar’s marker. Along with the trio of points, he had a plus-four rating over the two games and is one of three Warrior defensemen with 10 points or more on the campaign.

Sam Colangelo, NU (So., F; Stoneham, Mass.) Was the Huskies’ top point-scorer against Vermont with his second three-point game of the season (1g, 2a). He assisted on the opening goal of the game, the game-tying goal by Harris, and knotted the eventual game-winner late in the third.

Justin Hryckowian, NU (Fr., F; L’Île-Bizard, Que.) Notched two key assists in a 5-4 victory over Vermont. He assisted Colangelo with the first two goals and went 14-7 in the faceoff dot.

Jordan Harris, NU (Sr., D; Haverhill, Mass.) Initially tied the game at 2-2 in the third, spurring the Huskies to a four-goal third period effort to take the game, 5-4. Also assisted on Colangelo’s game-winning goal for a total of two points on the night.
