HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

#16 Northeastern kept its spot atop the Army ROTC Hockey East standings with a sweep over #13/13 Providence, NU’s first since 2009. Rookie sensation Devon Levi earned his third straight Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week nod after going 2-0-0 with a 0.50 GAA and .986 save percentage in a weekend sweep of Providence, Northeastern’s first since 2009. He made 37 saves in a 2-0 victory on Friday at Schneider Arena to break the program’s single-season shutout record (6), after just 17 starts.

Vermont earned four league points on the back of solid goaltending from Gabe Carriere. The sophomore stopped 73 of the 74 shots he faced this weekend at Maine. On Friday night he earned his first career shutout making 23 saves in a 1-0 win. On Saturday he made 50 saves, tied for the most by a goaltender in a single game this season among all NCAA goalies.

Boston University toppled New Hampshire, 3-1, and took a 2-1 overtime win to earn five conference points. Case McCarthy led BU with three points on three assists. He set up both goals in the Terriers’ 2-1 overtime win at UNH on Saturday while goaltender Drew Commesso allowed just two goals in a weekend sweep of UNH and 33 of his 57 saves came in either the third period or overtime in the two wins.

UMass and UMass Lowell were announced as participants in the 2022 Friendship Four, which will return to Belfast, Northern Ireland after a two-year hiatus over Thanksgiving weekend next season. The two rivals then battled to an electric two-game series that saw the Minutemen go 1-0-1 thanks to the Herculean efforts of Anthony Del Gaizo. He tied the score twice at #15 UMass Lowell on Friday as his second goal came with 1:27 remaining in regulation to force overtime and earn UMass a point on the road. It marked the first career multi-goal game for the senior, who followed up with the game-winning goal in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the River Hawks.

Anthony Del Gaizo - Massachusetts

Anthony Del Gaizo (Sr., F; Basking Ridge, N.J.) led UMass to a 1-0-1 week with a team-high four points on three goals and an assist. He tied the score twice at #15 UMass Lowell on Friday as his second goal came with 1:27 remaining in regulation to force overtime and earn UMass a point on the road. It marked the first career multi-goal game for the senior, who followed up with the game-winning goal in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the River Hawks and an assist on UMass’ game opening power play tally for his second straight multi-point effort. Has an active four-game point streak (3g, 3a).

Devon Levi - Northeastern

Devon Levi (So., G; Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que.) went 2-0-0 with a 0.50 GAA and .986 save percentage in a weekend sweep of Providence, Northeastern’s first since 2009. The rookie made 37 saves in a 2-0 victory on Friday at Schneider Arena to break the program’s single-season shutout record (6), after just 17 starts. Followed it up with a 34 save performance in a 4-1 win on Saturday at Matthews Arena. Levi has allowed two goals or fewer in 12 straight games.

Case McCarthy - Boston University

Case McCarthy (Jr., D; Clarence Center, N.Y.) led BU with three points on three assists. He set up both goals in the Terriers’ 2-1 overtime win at UNH on Saturday, including the lone helper on Max Kaufman’s overtime winner. McCarthy’s work along the half-wall to keep the puck in the zone directly led to Kaufman’s winner. McCarthy led BU with nine shots on goal this weekend.

Gabe Carriere - Vermont

Gabe Carriere (So., G; Ottawa, Ont.) stopped 73 of the 74 shots he faced this weekend at Maine as the Catamounts earned four points in Orono. On Friday night he earned his first career shutout making 23 saves in a 1-0 win. On Saturday he made 50 saves, tied with Michigan State’s Pierce Charleson for the most by a goaltender in a single game this season.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Max Kaufman, BU (Gr., F; Rochester, N.Y.) Led BU with two goals in a weekend sweep of New Hampshire, including a terrific backhander for the overtime winner in a 2-1 triumph at UNH on Saturday. Kaufman also blocked five shots, generated five shots on goal and was a plus-two.

Drew Commesso, BU (So., G; Norwell, Mass.) Allowed just two goals in a weekend sweep of UNH. 33 of his 57 saves came in either the third period or overtime in the two wins, including 21 in the overtime victory on Saturday.

Scott Morrow, UMass (Fr., F; Darien, Conn.) Scored in both games against #15 UMass Lowell, helping UMass to a 1-0-1 weekend against the River Hawks. Also added an assist on Friday’s road contest. Has an active three-game goal scoring streak and a five-game point streak (3g, 3a).

Carl Berglund, UML (Jr., F; Hammaro, Sweden) Led the River Hawks in scoring across weekend series with Massachusetts, dishing out three assists in two games. The junior forward also scored the game-winning goal in the shootout Friday night to earn the River Hawks the extra point against the Minutemen.

Matt Crasa, UML (Fr., F: South Setauket, N.Y.) Scored a pair of goals in tie with Massachusetts on Friday. He leads the River Hawk freshmen in points with eight (5g, 3a).

Nick Austin, UML (Gr., D; St. Louis Park, Minn.) Dished out an assist in each of the River Hawks’ clashes with Massachusetts. He finished the weekend with a pair of blocks.

Gunnarwolfe Fontaine, NU (So., F; East Greenwich, R.I.) Scored two goals and added an assist in a weekend set with Providence, including the game-winning goal on Friday at Schneider Arena.

Jack Hughes, NU (Fr., F; Westwood, Mass.) Despite being a game-time decision, scored twice and added an assist in a 4-1 victory over No. 13 Providence to help the Huskies to their first weekend sweep of the Fri- ars since 2009.
