BOSTON, Mass. - Hudson Malinoski scored the game-winning goal with 6:54 left in regulation as they No. 6/6 Providence College men's hockey team earned a first-round bye in the Hockey East Tournament with a 3-2 win at Northeastern on Saturday (March 8) at Matthews Arena. The fifth-seeded Friars will travel to fourth-seeded UConn for the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Friday (March 14) in Storrs, Conn. Puck drop will be 7 p.m. from the Toscano Family Ice Forum and will be broadcasted by NESN.

NOTES

- The teams skated through the opening period scoreless. The Friars and Huskies were even in shots at 11 apiece after 20 minutes.

- Providence struck for a pair of early second period goals to take a 2-0 lead.

- Will Elger re-directed a point shot from Guillaume Richard for his eighth goal of the season to get Providence on the board. Graham Gamache earned an assist on the play.

- Logan Sawyer cashed in on the power play just 2:01 later with his sixth goal of the season. Trevor Connelly and Austen earned the assists on the power-play marker.

- Northeastern responded with 10:07 left in the second period on a Jake Higgins goal to cut the Friar lead to 2-1.

- Dylan Hryckowian's power-play goal tied the game at 2-2 with 7:31 left in the regulation.

- Malinoski re-directed a point shot from Connor Kelley just 37 seconds later to re-gain the lead for the Friars at 3-2. The goal marked Malinoski's 11th of the season and second game-winning goal of the season.

- Borgiel stood tall in the closing minutes to seal the win, turning away a late Northeastern push during a 6-on-5 situation.

- Providence concludes the 2024-25 regular season at 21-9-5 and 11-8-5 in Hockey East action.

- The Friars improve to 11-3 this season in one-goal games.
