ORONO, Maine - The Holy Cross women's hockey team concluded the regular season with a final game at Maine on Saturday, Feb. 22. A strong fight from the Crusaders forced an overtime battle with the Black Bears resulting in a 2-2 OT tie and 2-0 shootout victory for the extra point in league standings.
BETWEEN THE PIPES:
Holy Cross: Abby Hornung (T, 7-14-3), 35 saves
Maine: Julia Bachetti (T, 4-5-2), 22 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At 4:36 in the first period, Maine's Mikayla Border scored for the 1-0 lead.
- In the second period, freshman defender Kaitlin Sullivan fired the puck around the boards to clear it out of the Crusader defensive zone. Senior forward Mackenzie King took advantage of a Black Bears line change and took off after the puck driving into the top left corner of the goal at 17:47 to tie the game 1-1.
- Just a minute and 30 seconds into the third period and Maine reclaimed the lead with a goal by Adriana van de Leest. With 7 seconds left in regulation and an empty net for the Crusaders, senior defender Carmen Elliott fired a shot from the point which deflected off of the stick of junior forward Charlotte Sonntag into the back of the net to force the game into overtime. Sophomore forward Reghan Chadwick set the play in motion to earn an assist on the goal.
- Holy Cross and Maine ended overtime with a 2-2 final score and went to a shootout to decide which team would take home the extra point in league standings. King and junior assistant captain Alexia Moreau netted their shootout attempts while Hornung shut out the Black Bears for the 2-0 shootout victory.
- Maine led Holy Cross 37-24 in shots on goal and 30-28 in face-offs to conclude the game.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- Moreau played in her 100th game and scored one of the two shootout goals.
- King netted her fourth goal of the season.
- Sonntag scored her sixth goal on the year.
- Hornung had her second shootout shut out this season.
- The Crusaders conclude the regular season with the best overall record in Hockey East era history (10-19-4).
