WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's hockey team hosted Vermont for the Youth Day and Taylor Swift Music game on Sunday, Feb. 16. For the first time in history, the Crusaders completed a regular season series sweep with the 3-1 win over the Catamounts.
BETWEEN THE PIPES:
Holy Cross: Abby Hornung (W, 7-13-2), 29 saves
Vermont: Jane Gervais (L, 5-17-2), 16 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Midway through the first period, sophomore Lulu Rourke went on a breakaway, picking up a rogue rebounded Vermont shot, to net a top-shelf wrister on her own at 9:11.
- In the second period, a strong battle on the boards, by redshirt freshman defender Kenzee Hope and junior assistant captain Alexia Moreau, set up sophomore forward Reghan Chadwick for a successful breakaway attempt for the 2-0 lead at 18:19.
- Late in the third period, Vermont pulled its goalie for the extra skater advantage. After nine shots over almost two minutes, the Catamounts finally got the puck past Hornung at 18:58, scored by Julia Mesplede. Then, within one of the Crusaders, Vermont continued its strategy of playing without a goalie in net and an extra skater on the ice. A pile up on the boards near the Holy Cross net resulted with senior defender Emilie Fortunato gaining possession and working the puck up the ice. At 19:54, Fortunato found Rourke, who sent the puck in for the empty-netter to seal the 3-1 win for the Crusaders.
- Vermont led Holy Cross 30-19 in shots on goal and 31-20 in face-offs to conclude the game.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- Rourke scored her fourth goal of the season.
- Chadwick netted her second goal on the weekend in back-to-back games and her fifth on the year.
- Holy Cross earned its first regular season series sweep over Vermont.
