BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston University women's ice hockey team (18-8-1, 15-4-1 HE) played to a 4-1 win over Vermont (6-20-2, 5-14-2 HE) on Saturday evening at Walter Brown Arena. Ten Terriers tallied at least one point in the win as BU extended its winning streak to four games.
BU put pressure on Vermont's net from the get-go and was able to secure a 1-0 lead in the first frame. The Catamounts responded with a shorthanded goal early in the second, but BU quickly responded. A power-play goal just over two minutes later put the Terriers back into a lead it never relinquished. BU tacked on an additional power-play goal and an empty net goal in the third to secure the 4-1 win over the Catamounts.
Junior Sydney Healey scored BU's first and fourth goals of the night while graduate student Julia Shaunessy and junior Luisa Welcke both scored on the power play. Juniors Lilli Welcke, Clara Yuhn, Maeve Carey and Maeve Kelly, senior Maggie Hanzel, graduate student Lindsay Bochna and freshman Kaileigh Quigg all tallied assists. Bochna and Healey led the Terriers in points with two apiece.
Senior Callie Shanahan played the full 60 minutes between the posts, making 17 saves in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- BU spent most of the opening 10 minutes of the game generating chances on the Vermont end of the ice.
- The Terriers converted on one of those chances when Hanzel passed to Li. Welcke, who found S. Healey at the circle to set her up for a shot that initially hit the post.
- S. Healey then poked the rebound into the net to put the Terriers in the lead 1-0 with 9:36 to go in the first.
- Vermont went to the box for interference with 15:46 to play in the second, putting BU on its first power play of the day.
- A BU pass was intercepted in the Vermont zone which gave the Catamounts a 1-on-1 chance, during which they scored a shorthanded goal.
- BU had 21 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage due to the fact that Vermont was called for tripping.
- With 1:09 left on BU's 5-on-4 power play, the Catamounts added another player to the box for tripping, putting BU up 5-on-3 once again.
- The Terriers took advantage of their extra skaters when Shaunessy scored off a pass from Yuhn and a deflection from Bochna in the slot to go up 2-1 at the 7:37 mark.
- The second penalty for Vermont cleared with no change in score.
- BU was called for slashing with 3:04 to play in the second but successfully killed the penalty.
- Vermont went to the box for hooking at 19:21 in the second and BU did not score on the power play which carried over into the third.
- BU was called for boarding at the 9:02 mark.
- The Terriers were successfully defending Vermont's power play until the Catamounts were given a five-minute major for boarding, creating 4-on-4 play for 24 seconds.
- BU gained momentum through the power play when passes from Kelly and Carey made their way to Lu. Welcke, who deflected the puck in from the slot for BU's third goal of the day.
- Vermont pulled its netminder with 1:52 to go in the game.
- The Terriers solidified their win when Bochna passed to Quigg, who sent the puck down the ice where S. Healey retrieved it to score the empty net goal, bringing the final score to BU 4, Vermont 1.
