WORCESTER, Mass. - Backed by sophomore netminder Mari Pietersen's first career shutout, the No. 15 Boston University women's ice hockey team (15-8-1, 12-4-1 HE) defeated Holy Cross (7-14-3, 3-12-3 HE) in a 2-0 decision on Friday evening at the Hart Center Rink.
BU went up 1-0 early in the opening frame thanks to sophomore Alex Law's first goal of the season. The second frame saw two 4-on-4 situations on the ice, but it was BU that capitalized at the end of a power play to go up 2-0 with a game-winning-goal from freshman Lola Reid. The Terriers kept Holy Cross from scoring through the final 20 minutes
Junior Luisa Welcke, freshman Kiera Healey and graduate students Julia Shaunessy and Tamara Giaquinto all logged assists. Sophomore goaltender Mari Pietersen made 25 saves in her fifth start of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Just over four minutes into the first frame, Lu. Welcke won the battle for the puck behind the BU net and passed to Shaunessy, who sent it down the ice.
- Law collected the puck and lifted it in at the near post for her first goal of the season.
- BU then killed off an interference call shortly thereafter.
- Freshman Kaileigh Quigg drew a holding call at 16:00 to put BU on the power play, but Holy Cross kept the Terriers from adding to their lead.
- BU skated well on both ends of the ice for the bulk of the second frame until BU was called for roughing and Holy Cross was called for slashing with 8:23 to go.
- Neither team scored during 4-on-4 play.
- BU was called for body checking and then Holy Cross went to the box for body checking 31 seconds later, resulting in the second 4-on-4 situation of the day.
- Moments after BU's power play expired, passes from K. Healey and Giaquinto found their way to Reid, who sent in a backhanded shot from the circle to extend BU's lead to 2-0 at the 17:54 mark.
- The third period saw both teams skating well on both ends of the ice with no change in score.
- Holy Cross pulled its goalie with 3:46 to go in the third in favor of the extra skater.
- With 1:46 to go, BU went to the box for cross checking but continued to defend well through 6-on-4 play to hold on for the 2-0 shutout.
