BOSTON, Mass. - Junior co-captain Ryan Greene scored exactly a minute into overtime to lift the No. 11 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 18/19 New Hampshire at Agganis Arena to complete a weekend sweep of the Wildcats.
The Terriers extended their win streak to four games and improve to 13-7-1 on the year while staying atop the Hockey East standings with a 9-3-1 mark.
UNH scored just 8:27 into the contest to take a 1-0 lead but senior Mathieu Caron and the BU defense held strong for the remainder of the contest to allow for the comeback win. Freshman Cole Eiserman tied the game at 7:45 of the second with a power-play goal from the right circle.
The Terriers withstood a 15-4 shot deficit in the third period, sending the game to overtime, where Greene potted a chance at the right post off a pass from sophomore Jack Harvey for the winner. It was Harvey's second assist of the contest, as he and freshman Cole Hutson set up the game-tying tally.
Caron finished the night with 34 saves and had the secondary assist on the overtime tally.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats opened the scoring at the 8:27 mark of the opening period.
- UNH had two chances to extend its lead on the power play, but BU's penalty kill stood strong, backed by four stops from Caron.
- Eiserman tied the contest at the 7:45 mark of the second stanza with a power-play tally. Off a clean offensive zone faceoff win, the Terriers showed good puck movement as Harvey skated into the right circle and dropped the puck back to Hutson, who then dished a no-look pass to Eiserman at the right circle. Eiserman wasted no time, one-timing the puck past Jared Whale (19 saves).
- Freshman Alex Zetterberg nearly gave BU a 2-1 lead at the 11:53 mark off a nifty outlet pass from sophomore Shane Lachance.
- Caron made back-to-back saves with less than three minutes remaining in the middle frame to keep the contest tied at 1-1.
- Early in the final period, Caron and Engum came up clutch on the Terriers' third penalty kill, both making sprawling saves in the blue paint. Engum made the final stop of the sequence, kicking out his right leg along the goal line to deny a sure goal.
- Senior Matt Copponi had the Terriers' best chance of the third period at the 9:17 mark as he deked around a UNH defender and backhanded a shot on net while being hooked down to the ice.
- The Wildcats were gifted a late power play but the Terriers completed a 5-for-5 night on the penalty kill to send the game to OT.
- Greene started the game-winning sequence when he collected the puck from behind his own net. He then skated the puck from end-to-end into the UNH zone before dropping it off to Harvey who found Greene again at the doorstep for the finish.
