WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's hockey team hit the road to take on Providence for game one of two on Friday, Jan. 17. The two teams tied 1-1 after a scoreless overtime period but the Crusaders earned the extra point in Hockey East standing with a 1-0 shootout win.
BETWEEN THE PIPES:
Holy Cross: Abby Hornung (T, 4-10-1), 29 saves
Merrimack: Calli Hogarth (T, 2-10-2), 26 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Midway through the first period, sophomore assistant captain Emily Crovo picked off the puck and found senior forward Michela Lio in front of the net for the back-handed goal at 7:41.
- Merrimack tied the game 1-1 late in the second period with a goal by Madison Cardaci at 16:13.
- Neither team scored in the third period or overtime to end the game 1-1 and force a shootout to determine which team earns the extra point in Hockey East standings.
- Crovo netted the first goal of the shootout and Hornung shut out the Warriors in all three attempts to help the Crusaders pick up two points so far on the weekend.
- Merrimack led Holy Cross 30-27 in shots on goal and 27-25 in face-offs to conclude the game.
