BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 13 Boston University women's ice hockey team defeated Vermont in a 2-1 decision at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Friday evening.

After scoring just over a minute into the opening frame, BU built to a 2-0 lead in the second with a shorthanded goal. Vermont cut into BU's lead late in the third and pulled its goalie later on, but the Terriers kept the 2-1 lead to secure the win.

Junior Lilli Welcke opened the scoring and was backed up by Luisa Welcke in the second. Junior Maeve Kelly, graduate student Tamara Giaquinto, and Li. Welcke all picked up assists in the win.

BU improves to 13-5-1, 11-2-1 HE with the victory.


HOW IT HAPPENED

- One minute and one second into the game, junior Maeve Kelly stole the puck from Vermont and passed to Li. Welcke, who took the puck up the length of the ice to score.

- The Terriers were called for tripping at 3:27 into the first and successfully killed off the penalty.

- BU put up 10 shots on net in the second before it was called for hooking at the 11:26 mark.

- On the penalty kill, Li. Welcke stole the puck in the BU zone and passed it up the ice to graduate student Tamara Giaquinto, who found Lu. Welcke in the slot to help her score BU's third shorthanded goal of the season.

- BU successfully killed the penalty and shortly thereafter went on the power play thanks to a Vermont holding call, but nothing came of the extra skater advantage.

- The Catamounts were called for hooking with 54 seconds to go in the middle frame.

- Nothing happened on the power play for BU which ended in the beginning of the third.

- Vermont cut into BU's lead 2-1 at the 3:46 mark.

- The Catamounts were called for charging with 56 seconds to go in the frame.

- Right after play resumed, Vermont pulled its netminder for an extra skater, making it 5-on-5 on the ice.

- BU fended off Vermont's advances and held on for the 2-1 victory.


GAME NOTES

- BU narrowly outshot Vermont 25 to 22.

- Li. Welcke led BU with two points.

- BU was 3-for-3 and Vermont was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

- Sophomore Alex Law led in blocked shots with two.

- BU won 18 faceoffs compared to Vermont's 24.
