WORCESTER, Mass. - With senior Callie Shanahan's third shutout of the season, No. 13/14 Boston University women's ice hockey (12-5-1, 10-2-1 HE) posted a 3-0 win over Holy Cross (7-10-1, 3-8-1 HE) at the Hart Center Rink on Friday evening.

After a scoreless first period, BU went up 2-0 in the second before tacking on a third goal in the final frame to secure the 3-0 victory. The Terriers killed off eight penalties and went 2-for-5 on the power play over the course of the game to start the second half of the season with a win.

Senior Christina Vote opened the scoring on the power play for the Terriers with her first goal of the season. Junior Riley Walsh tipped in BU's second goal and graduate student Tamara Giaquinto scored BU's other power-play goal of the night.

Shanahan's 15 saves between the posts helped her set a season high in shutouts, bringing her career total to six.


HOW IT HAPPENED

- BU was called for body checking three minutes into the first but successfully killed the penalty.

- The Terriers served another penalty, this time for tripping, at the 9:21 mark but held off Holy Cross' advances.

- The game remained scoreless after the first and BU got a power-play chance 2:25 into the second.

- The Terriers took advantage of their extra skater advantage when junior Sydney Healey passed to junior Clara Yuhn, who set up Vote for the lamp lighter.

- Holy Cross went on the power play shortly thereafter and BU was successful on the penalty kill.

- At the 9:30 mark, BU won a faceoff and Giaquinto passed to junior Luisa Welcke, who sent a shot from the slot that Walsh tipped in at the crease to build BU's lead to 2-0.

- The Crusaders served a penalty for interference before BU was called for hooking with 15 seconds left on the power play, but neither team found the back of the net.

- BU had another power-play chance on a Holy Cross interference call, but nothing came of the advantage.

- With 1:45 to go in the second, the Terriers and Crusaders each had a player in the box for roughing.

- Neither team scored during 4-on-4 play which carried over into the third.

- The Terriers then killed off a penalty for tripping.

- Just after the end of the penalty kill, the Crusaders were called for slashing.

- Senior Maggie Hanzel set up Giaquinto, whose initial shot rebounded to sophomore Neely Nicholson. She then passed back to Giaquinto, allowing her to score her fifth power-play goal of the season and BU's final goal of the night.

- BU served a major penalty for boarding which turned into 4-on-4 play once again with 49 seconds left on the penalty kill.

- Nothing then came of the power-play chance for the Terriers.

- BU had one additional penalty for interference but kept Holy Cross from scoring to secure the shutout.


GAME NOTES

- BU outshot Holy Cross 30 to 15.

- While BU was 2-for-5 on the power play, Holy Cross was 0-for-7.

- The Terriers won 33 faceoffs compared to the Crusaders' 20.

- Holy Cross blocked 10 shots while BU blocked seven.

- Vote is now tied for most points on the BU squad with 13. She is tied with freshman Lola Reid.

- BU will head to Vermont for a pair of games on Friday (Jan. 10) and Saturday (Jan. 11).
