ORONO, Maine - The No. 13 Boston University women's ice hockey team (11-5-1, 9-2-1 HE) defeated Maine (3-15-0, 3-9-0 HE) in a 3-1 decision to wrap up the first half of the season on Friday evening at Alfond Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Terriers and Black Bears both found the back of the net on the power play to end the second frame tied 1-1. BU added two more goals in the third, one of which came on an empty net, to earn the 3-1 victory.
Graduate student Tamara Giaquinto, junior Riley Walsh and graduate student Lindsay Bochna all found the back of the net in the win. Senior goaltender Callie Shanahan made 25 saves in net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams skated evenly through most of the first period.
- The Terriers were called for hooking with 5:12 to go in the first and successfully killed off the penalty.
- BU and Maine ended the first tied 0-0 with 12 shots on goal apiece.
- Maine was called for too many skaters on the ice with 13:53 to go in the second, but BU did not convert on the power play.
- Maine served a penalty for hooking with 9:43 left in the second frame.
- Freshman Keira Healey and senior Maggie Hanzel passed to Giaquinto, who scored on the power play from the far side of the left circle to give BU a 1-0 lead.
- BU went to the box for hooking soon after and Maine evened the score on the power play to end the second tied 1-1.
- At the 7:38 mark in the third, BU took a 2-1 lead when Walsh deflected a shot into the net that junior Maeve Carey fired off from the blue line.
- The Terriers went to the box for body checking at the 17:03 mark and Maine pulled its goaltender in favor of an extra skater 51 seconds into the power play.
- Bochna stole the puck from Maine in the neutral zone and took it up the ice to score on the shorthanded empty-net opportunity, lifting BU to the 3-1 win.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers outshot the Black Bears 38 to 26.
- BU was 1-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
- Bochna's goal was BU's second shorthanded goal of the season
- The Terriers won 30 faceoffs compared to Maine's 23.
- Giaquinto led in blocked shots with three.
- The win secures the 3-0 series sweep over Maine for the 2024-25 season.
