NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Merrimack Women's Hockey Team played a whole 60 minute effort and were rewarded with 3-1 upset victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday afternoon to advance to Smashville Showcase final.
Merrimack (5-9-1, 2-6-1): 1, #13 Penn State (13-4-0, 6-0-0 AHA): 2
After a scoreless first period, Penn State would go ahead at 7:30 of the second period, the Warriors would get the goal back quickly as Abby Poitras long toss evaded the Penn State netminder for the tying goal. The Warriors would score again shortly thereafter as Maria Lindberg's backhand feed found Sophie McKinley who slotted home the shot for the go ahead goal.
In the third period, Merrimack and goaltender Margaux Favre stood tall time after time as Penn State turned up the pressure. After getting a powerplay late on, captain Raice Szott played a fantastic shift, blocking four shots to make the kill and she was rewarded with the empty net tally to put the Warriors in the tournament final.
