CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - No. 14/13 Boston University (10-4-1, 8-2-1 HE) posted a 3-1 win over No. 11/12 Boston College (9-4-0, 6-2-0 HE) on Saturday evening at Conte Forum to split the weekend series.
After BC scored in the opening frame, BU responded by taking a 2-1 lead early in the second. The Terriers continued to control the flow of the game, only allowing nine shots on net, and added a final goal late in the third to earn the 3-1 win over the Eagles.
Senior Ani FitzGerald, graduate student Lindsay Bochna and junior Sydney Healey all scored in the win. Senior goaltender Callie Shanahan made eight saves between the posts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- BC got on the board first with a goal 4:36 into the opening frame.
- BU continued to skate well on both ends of the ice through the remainder of the period and killed of a penalty right at the end as BC went into intermission with the 1-0 lead.
- The Terriers evened the score just 3:19 into the second when FitzGerald fired a shot into the top right corner of the net. She was assisted by freshman Kaileigh Quigg and junior Riley Walsh.
- At the 4:44 mark, junior Clara Yuhn passed across the BC zone to graduate student Julia Shaunessy, whose shot was saved and rebounded to Bochna at the crease, and she lifted the puck top shelf to put BU ahead 2-1.
- The Eagles served a penalty for slashing soon after, but BU did not score on the power-play chance.
- BC was called for tripping with 1:58 to go in the second and BU was called for interference 17 seconds later as the frame concluded with 4-on-4 play on the ice.
- Both penalties cleared at the beginning of the third with no change in the score.
- BC was called for tripping but was once again successful on the penalty kill.
- With 5:39 to go in the game, junior Li. Welcke passed the puck up the ice to Shaunessy and found Healey, who backhanded the puck into the net at the crease.
- The Eagles were called for body checking with under two minutes to go in the game and BU controlled the puck through the entire power play to complete the 3-1 win.
GAME NOTES:
- BU outshot BC 30 to nine, notably holding the Eagles to two shots on goal in the second frame.
- This marks the second time this season BU has held an opponent to less than 10 shots.
- The Terriers won 28 of 48 faceoffs.
- BU was 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
- Junior Maeve Carey led in blocks with two.
- Shaunessy played in her 100th career game in the win, picking up two points off two assists.
