DURHAM, N.H. - Junior forward Morgan Winters (Osprey, Fla.) scored two goals, while senior captain Alex Gagne (Bedford, N.H.) netted the game tying goal in the first period and assisted on the go-ahead goal in the second as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team defeated Northeastern, 4-1, on Friday evening in front of 5,937 fans at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.

Junior forward Cy LeClerc (Brentwood, N.H.) also found the back of the net for the Wildcats.

Junior goalie Jared Whale (Calgary, Alberta) earned the win with 23 saves.

The Wildcats move to 4-3-1 overall (1-2-1 Hockey East), while the Huskies fall to 1-5-2 (0-3-2 Hockey East).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Northeastern opened the scoring in the first period when Jake Higgins netted his first goal of the season at 1:54. Andy Moore and Ben Poitras were credited with the assists on the play giving Northeastern the early 1-0 advantage.

- The Wildcats would respond later in the period when coinciding penalties were assessed to each team. With each team playing with four skaters, Gagne found the back of the net on a breakaway tying the game 1-1 at the 9:18 mark for his first goal of the season. Sophomore forward Ryan Conmy (Alexandria, Va.) was credited with the assist setting up Gagne one-on-one with the goalie.

- At 12:30 of the second period, Winters fired a shot to the top right corner to give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead for his first goal of the year. Gagne and sophomore forward Jason Siedem (Madison, N.J.) each posted an assist.

- The Wildcats extended the lead to 3-1 at 14:38 of the third period, when LeClerc knocked in a rebound. Senior forward Colton Huard (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and senior defenseman Luis Lindner (Spittal an der Drau, Austria) were both credited with assisting the goal.

- The Wildcats would find the goal one more time when Winters was able to score his second goal of the contest on an empty net at 19:14 for the 4-1 final. Senior forward Robert Cronin (Plymouth, Mass.) won the faceoff sending Winters on his way for the goal.

- UNH outshot Northeastern, 31-24

- The Wildcats went 0-1 on the power play and the Huskies went 0-2.

- Whale improved to 4-3-1 on the season as he made 23 saves to post the win, while Cameron Whitehead tallied 27 saves for the Huskies.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

- The Wildcats now lead the all-time series, 102-76-16 and have won four straight versus the Huskies.

- That was the second time in his career that Winters scored two goals as he also netted two in the 6-4 win versus No. 1 Boston University on Oct. 13, 2023.

- Winters now has three career game-winning goals and five multi-point games.
