Merrimack, Boston University Skate to 3-3 Draw; Terriers Win Extra Point in Shootout

Box Score - Highlights

BOSTON, Mass. - The No. 15 Boston University women's ice hockey team (9-3-1, 7-1-1 HE) earned a shootout win at Agganis Arena against Merrimack (4-5-1, 2-4-1 HE) on Friday evening after the teams skated to a 3-3 draw.

BU went up 2-1 by the end of the opening frame and held its lead until Merrimack tied the game late in the second. The Terriers took a 3-2 lead in the third until the Warriors tied the game once again, forcing it to overtime in which neither team scored. BU was efficient in the shootout, scoring on its first two chances to win it, 2-0, and earn an extra point in the Hockey East standings.

Graduate student Lindsay Bochna, junior Luisa Welcke and sophomore Neely Nicholson all scored in regulation. Senior Maggie Hanzel and junior Sydney Healey netted BU's two shootout goals to help it extend its unbeaten streak to nine (8-0-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Both teams skated evenly through most of the first period until Bochna tipped in a pass from senior Christina Vote, who was set up by junior Clara Yuhn, to put the Terriers up 1-0.

- BU served a penalty for tripping and, 59 second in, Merrimack was called for too many skaters on the ice.

- Lu. Welcke stole the puck in the neutral zone and quickly skated back into the Merrimack end to score during 4-on-4 play with 4:17 to go in the frame.

- At the 18:22 mark, Merrimack got on the board to cut into BU's lead 2-1 going into the second.

- BU successfully killed a penalty and got a power-play chance in the second but nothing came of the extra skater advantage.

- The Warriors evened the score 2-2 at the 17:45 mark in the second.

- At 6:23 in the third, graduate student Julia Shaunessy poked the puck away from Merrimack and passed to Nicholson, who scored off a shot from behind the right circle.

- Merrimack answered just over two minutes later with its third goal of the night.

- The Warriors were called for interference at the end of the frame and the penalty was delayed, allowing BU to pull senior Callie Shanahan for an extra attacker in the Merrimack zone, but the horn sounded and the game went into overtime.

- The Terriers began overtime with 4-on-3 in their favor due to the penalty, but Merrimack held off their advances.

- BU continually put pressure on the Warriors, but the game went to a shootout.

- Hanzel took BU's first shot and scored while Merrimack's first shot was saved by Shanahan.

- Healey scored on her attempt and Merrimack missed on its second as BU won the shootout 2-0 to earn an extra point in the Hockey East standings.
