SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Boston University women's ice hockey team (5-3-0, 4-1-0 HE) posted a 4-1 win over Syracuse (2-6-0, 0-0-0 AHA) on Friday evening at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Syracuse got on the board in the first and held its lead late into the second before BU scored two goals in the final five minutes of the second frame to go up 2-1. The Terriers held their momentum through the third, tacking on two additional goals before the final horn sounded. Despite entering the box seven times in the game, including in the final 1:30, BU did not give up a power-play goal and held off the Orange to secure the 4-1 win.
Junior Clara Yuhn lit the lamp while freshman Lola Reid scored two back-to-back goals. Junior Maeve Kelly recorded the first goal of her collegiate career for BU's fourth of the night. Senior netminder Callie Shanahan made 28 saves in her fourth win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU was called for two penalties in the first but successfully killed both.
- Right after BU killed its penalty for holding, the Orange scored at the 12:26 mark to go up 1-0.
- BU had another successful penalty kill which carried over to the start of the second frame.
- Syracuse served two penalties and BU served one, but nothing came from the power play for either team.
- The Orange were called for interference and BU's power play went to work with Yuhn finding the back of the net off a setup from senior Christina Vote and graduate student Julia Shaunessy.
- Just under two minutes later, passes from senior Ani FitzGerald and junior Riley Walsh made their way to Reid who scored to put BU up 2-1.
- The end of the second stanza saw BU and Syracuse enter the box for roughing, with the Orange serving an additional penalty for cross checking to put BU on the power play going into the third.
- All of those penalties cleared with no change in the score.
- Shortly thereafter, junior Luisa Welcke's found Reid, who extended BU's lead to 3-1 with her second goal of the night.
- The Terriers added security to their lead at the 12:16 mark when Vote's pass across the ice found Kelly, who scored from the far side of the right circle for her first collegiate goal.
- BU was called for roughing with 1:30 to go in the game but it kept Syracuse at bay to earn the win, 4-1.
GAME NOTES
- Syracuse narrowly outshot BU, 28 to 23.
- BU was 1-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
- The Orange won 25 faceoffs to BU's 21.
- Both teams blocked 10 shots each.
- Reid extended her points streak to four games in the win.
- This was Shanahan's third game this season facing more than 20 shots.
- Vote and Reid led BU with two points each.
