BOSTON - Senior goaltender Mathieu Caron made 36 saves and four different Terriers founmd the back of the net as the No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team defeated Union, 4-1, on Saturday night at Agganis Arena.
BU (2-0-0) took a 3-0 lead in the opening frame with an even-strength goal from sophomore co-captain Shane Lachance and power-play tallies from freshmen Alex Zetterberg and Cole Eiserman, who both lit the lamp for the second straight game. Union (2-1-0) got on the board at 12:49 of the second period, but sophomore Jack Harvey quickly restored the Terriers' three-goal lead at 16:22.
Harvey assisted on Zetterberg's winner to finish with two points. Sophomores Tom Willander and Gavin McCarthy each had an assist, as did freshman Cole Hutson and junior Quinn Hutson. Freshman Kamil Bednarik and graduate student Brehdan Engum picked up their first points as Terriers on Harvey's second-period strike.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Caron was excellent all night, but particularly in the first period when he stopped all 17 shots he faced, including several point-blank opportunities.
- Lachance opened the scoring to give the Terriers the 1-0 lead at 8:38 of the first. Quinn Hutson won a board battle and found Lachance alone in the left circle, who quickly wired the puck past Kyle Chauvette (40 saves).
- Zetterberg doubled the Terriers' lead on the man advantage at 10:29 when Harvey slid a pass across the zone to Zetterberg, who rocketed a one-timer into the back of the net.
- Eiserman and Cole Hutson combined for a highlight-reel, power-play goal at 18:24 to make it 3-0. Hutson took the puck end-to-end and, as he took a big hit, found Eiserman in the slot, who went five-hole.
- Parker Lindauer picked up Union's lone goal to cut the Terrier lead to 3-1 at 12:49 of the second period.
- Harvey ended a strong shift from his line when he tapped in Bednarik's initial blast at 16:22 of the middle frame to make it 4-1.
- Caron made 12 more saves across the final 20 minutes to preserve the victory.
