ORONO, Maine - The Providence College women's hockey team opened Hockey East play with a 3-2 victory in overtime over University of Maine on Oct. 11 at Harold Alfond Sports Arena. Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.) scored the game-winner in overtime, while Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I) finished the night with 34 saves.

GAME FLOW & NOTES

-The Black Bears struck first, taking the lead 15:55 into the opening period with a goal by Alyssa Wrubble, assisted by Mira Seregély.

-Providence successfully killed off three penalties in the first period, including a 1:22 five-on-three

-Millie Sirum (Oslo, Norway) evened the score at 7:53 into the second period, with helpers from Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.) and Hannah Johnson (Readfield, Maine)

-Just 1:22 later, the Friars took the lead with Ashley Clark's first goal of the season with Hannah Johnson and Millie Sirum contributing the assists.

-Maine responded on the power play, tying the game 2-2 with 2:18 left in the second period. Stephanie Jacob scored for the Black Bears with help from Mira Seregély and Jamie Grinder

-The teams skated scoreless in the third period.

-Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.) netted the game-winner with two seconds to go in overtime to make the final score 3-2. Sarah Davies (Mississauga, Ontario) and Cristina Cavaliere (Mississauga, Ontario) were credited with the assists.

-The last time Providence opened Hockey East play with a victory was the 2022-23 season, a 4-0 victory over Holy Cross.

-Providence is now 6-1-0 in Hockey East openers under head coach Matt Kelly.

-The Friars have outscored their opponents 25-9 in Hockey East openers under Kelly.

-Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) finished the night with 34 saves, tying her career-high. She has tallied 34 saves in a game four times now in her career.
