MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Callie Shanahan made 40 saves for the Boston University women's ice hockey team, but No. 2 Minnesota scored a power-play goal with 2:20 remaining in regulation to escape with a 1-0 win on Friday night at Ridder Arena.
Minnesota (3-0-0) successfully challenged a minor penalty call and got it upgraded to a major after video review. Just seconds later, redshirt senior Abbey Murphy capitalized to put the hosts in front. The Gophers remained on the power play and BU was unable to generate any chances before the final horn sounded.
Shanahan recorded her third career 40-save performance in the loss.
After a scoreless first two periods, the Terriers had a penalty shot opportunity in the third but did not find the back of the net. BU was given a minor for head contact with 1:38 to go in regulation but Minnesota successfully challenged the call which was upgraded to a major and ruled a game misconduct. Moments later, the Golden Gophers scored on the power play to win 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU had two power-play chances and Minnesota had one in the opening frame, but neither made anything happen with the extra skater advantage.
- On the Gopher power play, Shanahan stifled their breakaway chance to keep the game scoreless headed into the second.
- The Terriers served a penalty for interference early in the second stanza but were once again successful on the penalty kill.
- With 5:24 to go in the second, there was a 4-on-4 situation on the ice with BU in the box for roughing and Minnesota in the box for cross checking.
- The second frame ended still 0-0.
- Halfway through the third, BU was called for tripping and killed off the penalty with no issue.
- BU elected to take a penalty shot when Minnesota was called for hooking with 7:01 to go but junior Lilli Welcke's shot was saved by the Gophers' netminder.
- With 1:38 remaining in regulation, BU was given a minor for head contact.
- Minnesota successfully challenged the call which was upgraded to a major.
- The Gophers scored on the power play 18 seconds later to defeat BU 1-0.
GAME NOTES
- BU was 4-for-5 on the penalty kill while Minnesota was 3-for-3.
- The Gophers outshot the Terriers 41-11.
- Minnesota won 41 faceoffs to BU's 20.
The Terriers blocked 23 shots, led by senior Tamara Giaquinto with five of her own.
- Giaquinto, junior Riley Walsh and sophomore Alex Law each had two shots on goal.
