STORRS, Conn. - The No. 1 seeded UConn women's ice hockey team won in overtime by a score of 2-1 at Toscano Family Ice Forum Wednesday night. Senior forward Kathryn Stockdale lifted the Huskies past the Eagles with the game-winning goal.
In the first, the Huskies got off to a strong start with less than two minutes of play in the first period. Ava Rinker sent a lofty pass over the heads of the Boston College (BC) defenders to find the stick of Jada Habisch as Habisch weaved around the goaltender for the opening point of the game. Then, both teams would protect their zone with shots continuing to hit on target. The Huskies then would earn their first power play with less than three minutes to go in the period on an interference penalty, but the Eagles would kill the foul. BC finished the period with one more shot than the Huskies with eight shots on goal. The score stayed at 1-0 UConn after one.
Both teams started out playing at an even level trading shot after shot in the second period. The Huskies would get a second power play on another interference call, but again the Eagles would kill the penalty. This time around, UConn outshot the BC by one with eight shots on goal as the score stayed at 1-0 after the second.
Right out of the gate in the third period, UConn would be called for a holding penalty, and the Eagles would execute tying the game at one apiece. Then, BC would find themselves fighting off two penalty kills both on body checking, but both penalties were killed. The Huskies began to pile up on shots on target with six quick shots on target to BC's two at eight minutes into the third. UConn totaled 13 at the end of the period and the score stayed tied at one after three.
In overtime, the Huskies couldn't get a lot of shots to reach the goal to open the frame, as BC cleaned up well defensively for the first six minutes. UConn would then earn its fifth power play on a hooking penalty, but the foul would expire. Then, at the 10:50 mark, Stockdale got the slick pass from behind goal by Megan Woodworth to slide the game-winning shot to the bottom left corner of the net.
