BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Boston University women's ice hockey team picked up a 4-1 road win over Vermont on Friday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse to vault ahead of the Catamounts in the Hockey East standings and complete a season sweep.
Seniors Catherine Foulem and Lacey Martin and junior Ani FitzGerald all recorded a goal and an assist and freshman Jackson Kinsler capped the scoring with her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Clara Yuhn notched a pair of assists.
UVM opened the scoring in the first but the Terriers responded less than a minute later and kept the Catamounts off the board the rest of the way.
Callie Shanahan made 25 saves for the Terriers, who improved to 13-15-3 overall and 11-12-1 in Hockey East play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UVM opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the game when Lily Humphrey converted from the left circle.
- The Terriers were able to quickly equalize, however, as FitzGerald sped through the neutral zone and curled around near the right boards before sending a puck on net that was tipped in off the stick of a UVM defender at 9:07 of the first.
- BU took the lead in the opening moments of the second period when Foulem found Martin in the left slot, where she beat UVM netminder Jessie McPherson with an elevated shot to the near corner.
- Minutes after coming out of the game due to a knee-to-knee hit, Foulem turned in a highlight-reel goal as a rebound off a Yuhn shot popped high in the air and Foulem batted the puck into the net with a mid-air backhand for her 11th goal of the season at 8:11 of the second for a 3-1 lead.
- BU took the two-goal lead into the second intermission and went on to record just one shot on goal in the third but it found the back of the net.
- FitzGerald skated up the right side and won a battle for the puck before kicking it over to Kinsler, who put the puck through McPherson's legs from just below the right dot with 12:32 remaining in regulation.
- Shanahan was sharp throughout the game and stopped the last 23 shots she faced to help seal the key road win.
GAME NOTES
- BU earned two home wins over Vermont back in January by scores of 6-1 and 4-2.
- UVM did not commit a penalty in the game and BU successfully killed off both of the Catamounts' power-play chances.
- The Catamounts held a 26-21 shot advantage.
- Senior Julia Shaunessy returned the lineup after missing the past 11 games due to injury and picked up an assist on the Kinsler goal.
- Sophomore Maeve Kelly earned an assist on the Terriers' first goal of the contest.
- Kinsler became the 19th Terrier to score a goal this season and that total sets a program record.
