STORRS, Conn. - The No. 11 ranked UConn women's ice hockey team took the 2-1 win in overtime over Providence Saturday night to remain unbeaten through their last 18 Hockey East games. Freshman Ashley Allard found the back of the net with under 1:30 left in extra time.
Junior goaltender Megan Warrener tied her season high in saves with 26 and continues to carry an unbeaten record of 11-0-1.
In the first, both teams traded shots on goal early in the period. With just under three minutes left the Huskies earned themselves a power play on a holding penalty, but the Friars would kill the foul. Providence outshot UConn only by two with seven shots on target. The score stayed at 0-0 after the first.
The Huskies continued to trade shots with the Friars in the early going of the second period. In under nine minutes to go in the period, UConn opened the scoring. As Brianna Ware skated down ice from a quick outlet, Megan Woodworth received the pass and directed one right at net from center ice. As the puck ricocheted off the goalie, Kathryn Stockdale grabbed the rebound to nail in the opening goal of the game. With 30 seconds remaining in the period, Providence earned itself a power play on an interference penalty that would carry over into the third period. Again, the Friars would tally two more shots on target than UConn. With 10. The score stayed at 1-0 after the second.
Then in the third period, the Huskies killed the penalty carried over from the second period. Both teams went back and forth trying to hold possession on the attack. With under 10 minutes to go in the game, Providence tied it up. The Huskies couldn't get the go-ahead goal in time before the buzzer sounded for overtime.
In overtime, Allard knocked in the unassisted goal off a loose puck in front of the goal with 1:14 left on the clock.
